Creative Arts Workshops

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at Park Circle Community Building, located at 4800 Park Circle (unless otherwise noted). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $20, materials provided. Registration opens the first business day of the month that the workshop takes places and closes two days prior to each workshop. Space is limited. January 27, 2024 De-Zine Your New Year with Stephania FRX Discover the art of storytelling through zine-making with local artist Stephania FRX! Craft your 2024 vision board, weaving the story of your upcoming year. Explore your desires, curate experiences, and align them with your larger goals by making art. Dive into self-discovery, ignite your imagination, and embrace creativity with collage, drawing, comics, and prose to inspire your New Year journey!

February 24, 2024 Intro to Fashion Design Sketching with ROLF Learn to create a fashion design following a few simple steps in this beginner’s introduction workshop led by artist and fashion designer Rolf Anthony Young. Rolf will provide adult participants with the tools to create fashion sketches to build a fantastic collection or a garment for an upcoming event. Don’t fear, you will be provided all the tools to succeed! If you have never used a croqui before, then you are in the right place. Participants will leave the workshop with a croqui to use, sketches of multiple outfits, and a solid foundation of how to take your vision for an outfit and technically sketch it out for production. *This workshop will take place at Park Circle Gallery (4820 Jenkins Avenue, North Charleston) where Rolf’s exhibition is on display.*

March 23, 2024 Decoupage a Plant Pot with Kyle Gardens Join Kyla, owner and operator of Kyla Gardens, and learn the art of decoupage! Simply put, decoupage is the art of decorating objects with paper cut-outs, kind of like a collage. During this workshop, adult participants will utilize different paper patterns to decorate and adorn plant pots. While getting creative with different floral prints and patterns, Kyla will discuss a brief history of decoupage and different strategies that can be used to get a desired decoupage design.

April 27, 2024 Straw Weaving with Kit Loney In straw weaving, a handful of plastic drinking straws serve as loom for weaving with a wide variety of yarn weights and textures. Learn about this fun, portable, accessible technique with local artist Kit Loney. Adult participants will begin the two-hour session with an introductory project, weaving dolls or bookmarks to learn the basic technique and concept. Kit will then discuss lengthier possibilities such as scarves and tapestry woven images.

May 18, 2024 (3rd Saturday due to Memorial Day Weekend) Intro to Charcoal Drawing with JD Clark Join local artist JD Clark for an introduction to drawing with charcoal.  Adult participants will practice creating quick, loose charcoal sketches to develop a composition.  JD will offer instruction on basic techniques, like how to use an eraser over charcoal to create tone and depth, using props such as a vintage watering can, vintage rocker, and seashells. Participants may even bring their own item(s) to sketch.

June 22, 2024 Pet Pawtraits with Kelly Kopacka In this Pet “Pawtrait” workshop, adult participants will receive step-by-step instruction and guidance from local artist Kelly Kopacka to create an acrylic painting of their dog or cat on canvas. Learn to use bold color and expressive brushwork to capture the personality of your furry companion. Participants must bring a clear photo of their pet for reference.
