The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at Park Circle Gallery in the Olde Village area of North Charleston (4820 Jenkins Avenue). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $20, materials provided*. Registration opens the first business day of the month that the workshop takes places and closes two days prior to each workshop. Space is limited. January 28, 2023 ● Pointed Pen Calligraphy with Camela Guevara ● Want to send elegant letters to friends & family, or address your own wedding invitations? Learn pointed pen calligraphy from artist Camela Guevara. Adult participants will learn about nibs and ink, as well as best practices to create stunning calligraphy for quotes, letters, and journaling. Students will receive a nib, nib holder, ink, as well as a workbook made by Camela to continue practicing after the workshop. No experience necessary.
February 25, 2023 ● Pop-Up Paper Dioramas with Jen York ● Local artist and fashion designer, Jen York (née Swearington) will guide adult participants through the creation of a collapsible, multi-layered 3-D diorama from cut paper with simple drawings, enlivened by watercolor. Participants will leave with their very own pop-up storybook scene that magically folds down or stands up for display.
March 25, 2023 ● Botanical Gelli-printing with Melissa Meverden ● Calling all nature lovers! Local artist and educator Melissa Meverden will offer instruction on creating one-of-a-kind art by monoprinting on a gel plate with botanicals such as grasses, leaves, and flowers. Participants will use layers of opaque and transparent paint with a variety of botanicals to celebrate the unique textures and shapes of nature. The resulting papers are wonderful for framing as art or using in other crafts. Previous experience with gelli-printing is a bonus, but not required.
April 22, 2023 ● Creating an Abstract Works of Art with Rolf Anthony Young ● Using multiple techniques and mediums, local artist Rolf Young will guide participants into the world of abstraction. Enter in without fear of failure! Every mistake is a good one; the key is to be reactive and adaptable. Participants will explore composition, color experimentation, and combining a variety of mediums to create a finished abstract piece of art. The workshop will end with a quick presentation on how best to present completed works.
May 20, 2023 (3rd Saturday due to Memorial Day) ● Intro to Watercolor with Sue Selvey ● Goose Creek Artist Guild member Sue Selvey will offer instruction in the basic principles of watercolor in this introductory workshop. Adult participants will learn about the difference between watercolor and other mediums, supplies, basic techniques, and will paint a dock scene using the techniques discussed.
June 24, 2023 ● Versatile Collage with Deborah Kinard ● Explore the versatile technique of collage with mixed media artist Deborah Kinard. Students will use watercolor, acrylics, gel printing, stencils, and stamps to make an array of custom mixed media papers. These collaged squares will then be embellished with needle and thread, buttons, beads, and more. The end results can be assembled as a book, mounted on a substrate, or sewn together to make a display.
