Creative Arts Workshops

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at Park Circle Gallery in the Olde Village area of North Charleston (4820 Jenkins Avenue). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $20, materials provided*. Registration opens the first business day of the month that the workshop takes places and closes two days prior to each workshop. Space is limited. June 24, 2023 Versatile Collage with Deborah Kinard Explore the versatile technique of collage with mixed media artist Deborah Kinard. Students will use watercolor, acrylics, gel printing, stencils, and stamps to make an array of custom mixed media papers. These collaged squares will then be embellished with needle and thread, buttons, beads, and more.  The end results can be assembled as a book, mounted on a substrate, or sewn together to make a display.

July 22, 2023 Shape Portraits with Andrea Glover Ever wanted to create a portrait, but didn’t know where to begin? Join local artist and designer Andrea Glover as she guides adult participants through the process of creating a monochromatic portrait using just shapes. Participants will learn to paint simple portraits and add fun lettering to match the style, resulting in a finished, professional-looking design.

August 26, 2023 Broken Dish Mosaics with Jodi Charak Learn the basics of pique assiette, a style of mosaic that incorporates ceramic shards, broken dishes, and other found objects into a design. Local artist Jodi Charak will guide adult participants through the creation of a small planter using tiles, china, grout, and basic tools.

September 23, 2023  Lino Cut Prints with Christopher Dotson Learn the basics of linoleum cut printmaking with local artist and 2023 North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition Winner Christopher Dotson. Adult participants will learn to transfer an image to a linoleum block, as well as techniques for carving, inking, and printing the block to paper using simple tools.

October 28, 2023 DIY Matting & Framing with Christopher Dotson Learn how to prepare your artwork for presentation from a professional artist! This workshop includes hands-on basics for measuring and cutting matboard, foam-core, and glass. Adult participants will learn the must have materials that are needed to get started, including instructions on how to source materials and supplies. Christopher will also share professional tips and tricks on how to minimize waste and maximize profit.

November 18, 2023 (3rd Saturday due to Thanksgiving) Wet Felting with Kim Keelor Join local fiber artist Kim Keelor for an introduction to one of mankind’s oldest textile processes, wet felting. Adult participants will use wool and silk to create a one-of-a-kind abstract wall hanging using simple tools.
