Concurrent exhibits on display throughout December
The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that concurrent solo exhibitions of mixed media works by Rebecca Horne (West Columbia, SC) and Andrea Lopez Chen (Portland, OR) will be on display at Park Circle Gallery from December 1-30, 2021. A free reception hosted by the artists will be held at the gallery on Friday, December 3, from 5:00-7:00pm. The public is invited to attend.
Abstraction Distraction – Mixed media works by Rebecca Horne
The mixed media works in Rebecca Horne’s exhibit, Abstraction Distraction, aim to distract the viewer from the present moment and instead transport them to a space of joy and tranquility. Led by the movement of paint, Horne selects colors and textures to create pieces that invoke emotion and inspire thought. “Creating unique, unpredictable art that intrigues the viewer is my passion,” Horne explains. “I have a strong desire to make art that makes people think and feel. I love to hear what people see and how the art captures their imagination.”
Rebecca Horne is a self-taught abstract artist based in West Columbia, SC. Her father was an artist, which influenced her to begin painting as a child and exploring a variety of mediums throughout her artistic career. In 2018, she discovered abstract fluid art and mixed media and has passionately embraced it as the style of art that evokes and liberates her creative spirit. Dreaming of Home – Mixed media paintings by Andrea Lopez Chen
In her exhibition Dreaming of Home, Andrea Lopez Chen presents a series of mixed media paintings that depict her nostalgia for the objects and memories of her youth in Colombia, South America. Her colorful and intuitive paintings utilize acrylic paint, collage, stencils, and various textures that draw the viewer into a whimsical story of her past. From her father’s vintage Volkswagen, to her grandmother’s homemade chicken soup, to items from her grandmother’s apartment like her “radiola” (old radio) or typewriter, Chen immortalizes her memories in each layered piece. “They are pieces of my past, clues to my future, and are woven into me as an artist,” she says.
Andrea Lopez Chen is a Colombian born artist, currently living and working Portland, OR. She is a practicing pediatrician and self-taught artist. These two passions interrelate with each other in a fine and intimate way and find common ground in her attention to detail. One brings the reasonable logic and linear thinking while the other allows her to dream, to imagine, and to take risks. The Park Circle Gallery is located at 4820 Jenkins Avenue in North Charleston, in what was formerly known as the Olde Village Community Building. Admission is free and free street parking is available on Jenkins Avenue in front of the gallery, as well as on the adjacent streets and in parking lots close by. The gallery is open 10:00am-6:00pm Wednesday-Friday, and Noon-4:00pm on Saturday (Closed December 23-25 due to Christmas holiday).
