2022 North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Winner presents solo exhibit May 4-27
The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that mixed media works by Kiawah Island based artist Deborah Kinard will be on display at Park Circle Gallery from May 4-27, 2022. Deborah is the winner of the 2022 North Charleston Arts Fest Poster Design Competition and her winning design, Memories 222, will be featured in the exhibition, which is presented as a component of the annual North Charleston Arts Fest. A free public reception will be held at the gallery in conjunction with the North Charleston Arts Fest Arty Block Party from 5-7pm on Friday, May 6.
In Oh Pearl: The World is Your Oyster, Deborah Kinard presents a collection of abstract mixed media pieces. Curiosity, nature, and love of color inspire her work, which is often experimental and produced through collage and layering techniques using a variety of substrates and materials. After a career of over 35 years in education, Deborah has had the privilege of spending the last year simply creating and living in her art. These works are the culmination of her newfound freedom to take the opportunities life provides, and a reminder to celebrate the art found in every day.
As a recently retired elementary and middle school teacher, Deborah Kinard has transformed her life-long passion for art from a pastime to a full-time endeavor, creating every day from her home studio on Kiawah Island. Deborah really enjoys experimenting with handmade papers, inks, hand-carved stamps, and various consistencies of paint. Her artwork typically initiates through her daily journaling practice, where she begins making marks intuitively and adding layers of colors and materials to create a journal spread. Sometimes these ideas become a bigger piece of artwork on canvas, paper, or wood. Through this process she finds her work constantly evolving. Deborah has participated in many artist guild and juried exhibitions throughout the Lowcountry and has received numerous awards over the years. She is a member of the Charleston Artist Guild, Kiawah Artist Guild, Folly Beach Artist Guild, and the South Carolina Artisan’s Center, where her work is currently on display and available for purchase.
