US Representative Thomas McMillan does the Charleston on the steps of the US Capital.
Thomas McMillan represented the Sixth District for eight terms in Congress (1925-1939), but his first love was baseball. As a young man he led the South Atlantic League in both batting average and stolen bases.
Upon his sudden death in 1939, his wife Clara, succeeded him in office.
In 1942, a 300-unit housing complex, Tom McMillan Homes, was built for navy and shipyard workers was named in his honor. The community was razed in 1972 and the Charleston Naval Regional Medical Center was erected on the Rivers Avenue site.
So, this is why McMillan Avenue is called McMillan Avenue.
