The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is proud to sponsor a free evening concert by the popular and internationally acclaimed Lowcountry Voices on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 5:00pm. The concert, titled Hold Out Your Light, will take place at St. Matthew Baptist Church, located at 2005 Reynolds Avenue, North Charleston, and will pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There is no admission fee, but a ticket is required.
Hold Out Your Light will feature classical choral music, spirituals, traditional and contemporary gospel music, and dynamic guest narration by Rev. Dr. Kylon Middleton, Pastor of Mt. Zion AME Church in Charleston. In addition, Lowcountry Voices will present a special Community Service Award to Charles Fox and the Fox Family for decades of supplying service to the church and community through their business Fox Music House.
Lowcountry Voices, known as the choir with the authentic, multi colored kente cloth stoles, is a multicultural and ethnically diverse choir of nearly 70 voices consisting of singers ranging from high school students to senior and seasoned vocalists. The choir is dedicated to performing a standard choral repertoire with special emphasis on African-American music, including Black gospel, jazz, and spirituals. The 501(c)(3) performing arts organization focuses on these genres as they were nurtured and performed in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Lowcountry Voices has performed in multiple venues throughout South Carolina, as well as across the United States and abroad. The group has shared the stage with music legend James Taylor, was honored to sing at the services for the Honorable Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the slain pastor of the Mother Emanuel AME tragedy, and has participated in many collaborations with individuals and groups such as the North Charleston Pops!, artist Jonathan Green, and African American choral music icon Roland Carter.
