North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey and City Council will mark the start of construction on the City’s third senior center with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, September 27 at 10:00 am.
Located on Carner Avenue, design and amenities of the 12,000 square foot senior center have been carefully planned to promote wellness, encourage social interaction, and support ongoing educational opportunities. Features of the Center include, an exercise room, gym, an indoor exercise pool, pickleball courts, five activity rooms, and a coffee bar. Each of the areas have been programmed to encourage participation and interaction among senior center patrons.
“We are excited to break ground on North Charleston’s highly anticipated third senior center, a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our beloved senior community,” stated Mayor Summey. “The Carner Avenue Senior Center will become a vibrant hub for our seniors of the south end of our city to foster social connections, promote health and wellness, and ensure they thrive in our great city for years to come.”
Construction for the $6.8 million project is estimated to be completed by the late 2024 with facility services beginning by the end of 2024.
North Charleston is also embarking on its fourth Senior Center to be located on Patriot Boulevard. This center, in partnership with Dorchester County Council, is currently in its infancy.
