North Charleston Presents Dinner Theatre in Honor of Black History Month on February 22

The North Charleston Cultural Arts Department is set to host a special dinner theatre performance in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, February 22, with Frederick Douglass… No Turning Back presented by Actor’s Theatre of South Carolina. Directed by Chris Weatherhead and starring Kyle Taylor and Clarence Felder, the one-act play is full of bravery, hope, and song. Dinner for the evening, catered by Centerplate, will be served buffet style and includes ricotta, mushroom and spinach stuffed chicken breast with tomoato coulis, garden salad, orzo and rice pilaf, brussels sprouts medley, dinner rolls, and caramel fudge pecan cake. Tickets are on sale until Monday, February 19.

Frederick Douglass… No Turning Back is a stirring one-act show that takes place in 1872 in an anti-slavery church in Ohio pastored by Reverend Brewster (Clarence Felder), who invites Douglass (Kyle Taylor) to address his congregation. Douglass recounts his wild journey from being a slave to one of the greatest orators, educators, and reformers in American history. This show premiered at Piccolo Spoleto to great acclaim and is now on tour.

Kyle Taylor has appeared in theatre productions in New York City and Los Angeles. His local credits include Dr. Martin Luther King in The Mountain Top for Pure Theatre, Crown in Porgy in Bess at Dock Street Theatre, and Crooks in Of Mice and Men at Threshold Repertory Theatre.

Theatre, film, and television veterans Clarence Felder and Chris Weatherford founded Actor’s Theatre of South Carolina in 1995 with a mission to produce new works in theatre and film by South Carolinians. They are one of only a few professional theatres in South Carolina to have a film division. They provide professional training to individuals in the entertainment industry. Actor’s Theatre of South Carolina has received recognition throughout the state including grants from The Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, The South Carolina Arts Commission, The South Carolina Humanities Council and others.
