North Charleston Presents Children’s Theatre performance on Feb. 5

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a Children’s Theatre performance in recognition of Black History Month at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center from 10:00-11:00am on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. North Carolina based performing arts group Bright Star Touring Theatre will present a collection of stories and music in their original production titled African Folktales. The program is appropriate for all ages, but best suited for grades K-5. Schools, daycares, community groups, families, and individuals are welcome to attend. Tickets are $2 per child with accompanying adults admitted at no charge. Parking is free.

From the desert lands of the Sahara to the plains of the Serengeti to Mount Kilimanjaro and beyond – join a variety of characters from a wide range of cultures in stories that celebrate the various folk tale traditions of the continent of Africa.  African music helps to set the stage for these energetic stories.  Featured stories include Anansi, porquoi tales, and many facts and figures about this incredible continent.

The 2019/20 season marks Bright Star Touring Theatre’s 17th year of providing professional theatre to young audiences.  The group travels across the nation, providing nearly 1,400 performances to young audiences in nearly every imaginable venue.  They offer a wide variety of curriculum-based programs ranging from The Lady of Bullyburg to Heroes of the Underground Railroad. The company is based in Asheville, NC, but performs regularly at the National Theatre in Washington, DC, and has gained international support, accepting an invitation from the U.S. Embassy to visit Moscow, Russia, with their programs. Information about all of their interactive shows, including production videos, photos, study guides, and more is available online at www.brightstartheatre.com.

African Folktales is presented as the second of three productions for the North Charleston Cultural Arts Department’s 2019/20 Children’s Theatre Series.
