North Charleston Presents Children’s Theatre Performance in honor of Black History Month

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a Children’s Theatre performance in recognition of Black History Month at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center from 10:00-11:00am on Friday, February 5, 2016, featuring Let It Shine: The American Civil Rights Movement performed by Bright Star Touring Theatre. The program is best appreciated by audiences in grades 3 to adult. Schools, daycares, community groups, families, and individuals are welcome to attend. Tickets are $2 per child with accompanying adults admitted at no charge. Parking is free.

This powerful production is designed to provide an honest and accessible portrayal of pivotal moments in the American struggle for Civil Rights. The Freedom Riders, “Bombingham,” the Montgomery bus boycott, and the March on Washington are just a few of the significant events that unfold before the audience. Key figures and dynamic songs from the time period are brought to life and celebrated for their dedication to securing equal rights in America. The script is sure to provide a great launching pad for better understanding this challenging time in our nation.

Each year, Bright Star Touring Theatre serves nearly 1,000 audiences in schools, theaters, libraries, museums, and more across the country. They offer a wide variety of curriculum-based programs ranging from The Lady of Bullyburg to Heroes of the Underground Railroad. The company is based in Asheville, NC, but performs regularly at the National Theatre in Washington, DC, and has gained international support, accepting an invitation from the U.S. Embassy to visit Moscow, Russia, with their programs.
