North Charleston City Gallery to exhibit works by Susie Barrett and Inkyeong Baek

The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that mixed media works by Louisiana based artist Susie Barrett and oil paintings by Inkyeong Baek of Atlanta will be on exhibit at the North Charleston City Gallery from October 5-28, 2016.

In Vitamin Sea: Salt Water & Sunshine Susie Barret will display a collection of tropical themed pieces rendered in her signature, graphic “stained glass” style. Her light-hearted and playful works are heavily influenced by the vibrant color of the tropics, water, and infinity patterns. The images are methodically planned and painted with acrylics, then overlaid with oil detailing. The oil paint, typically black, produces vivid, colorful contrast in each piece.

Susie Barrett is a self-taught visual artist with a Master’s Degree in Media Arts from the University of Arizona. Her work has been displayed in both solo and group exhibitions in Texas and Louisiana. Barrett is a “Roster Artist” with the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and is affiliated with the Gold Leaf Gallery in Tyler, TX. The mother of three, she resides in Shreveport, LA. Playmobils II – Paintings by Inkyeong Baek
Heavily inspired by the social theories of Aldous Huxley, the pieces in Inkyeong Baek’s exhibit Playmobils II explore the effects of mass media on our consciousness. Her oil renderings of Playmobil figurines serve as representations of the public at large, unaware that their perceived reality is being shaped by a ruling elite. While her paintings of the popular children’s toys look playful and delightful, all is not as it seems.

Inkyeong Baek received a BFA in Contemporary Art from Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea, and recently earned an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited in a number of solo and group exhibitions in South Korea, Georgia, and North Carolina. She currently lives and works in Atlanta, GA.
