NCPD sponsoring essay contest for Black History Month

Every February, the North Charleston Police Department Cops Athletic Program hosts its annual Black History Month celebration/award ceremony. At the ceremony, we highlight students who participate and place in our annual essay writing contest, and the students will be asked to read their essays at that time.

If you are a middle or high school student, we invite you to enter our contest. We will give away 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes to both middle and high school students.

The topics for this year are as follows:

• If you are in middle school, please write a letter to a black historical figure and tell them how their work has impacted you personally. Tell them what they meant to you and how you want to carry on their legacy.

• If you are in high school, discuss if you have the opportunity to have a conversation with anyone from the civil rights movement, who would you choose and why? What would you all talk about?

The deadline to enter our contest is February 10th, 2023. You can deliver your essay in person to the North Charleston Police Department Administrative office to Cpl. J. Riley or Ptl. Aguilera, or use the link above to upload your essay.
