Mayor Summey on the death of Jamal Sutherland

May 12, 2021

From Mayor Summey: “It is with great sadness that I speak to you about the death of Jamal Sutherland. Like many of you, I have seen the recent news coverage, and believe it is in the community’s best interest to understand what happened. While the city’s involvement ended the day prior to Jamal’s passing, I can at least shed light on the city of North Charleston’s interactions.”

From Mayor Summey: On Wednesday, we released portions of our officers’ encounter with Jamal Sutherland. The Sutherland family has now called for the release of all videos in their entirety, and I am fully supportive of that request. These videos may be viewed and downloaded on the City of North Charleston’s website. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Sutherland family.
