North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey is proud to announce Joseph E. Munn will succeed Chief Greg Bulanow as Fire Chief of the North Charleston Fire Department on January 1, 2023. Chief Munn, a dedicated public servant with over 39 years of experience, will bring a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role.
Joseph Munn’s journey within the North Charleston Fire Department has been marked by dedication and service. He joined the department on October 17, 1984, as a recruit firefighter and worked his way up the ranks to become the Deputy Chief, a position he has held since 2009. Throughout his career, Chief Munn has been instrumental in shaping the department, fostering a culture of excellence, and overseeing numerous critical initiatives that have enhanced the safety of North Charleston’s residents.
Mayor Summey stated, “I am delighted to name Joseph Munn as the next Fire Chief of the North Charleston Fire Department. His deep understanding of the intricacies of firefighting operations uniquely positions him to lead the North Charleston Fire Department. His leadership is firmly grounded in the practical challenges and accomplishments of the fire service. His tenure and expertise are invaluable assets that will undoubtedly continue to drive the department’s growth and success, ensuring that North Charleston remains a community that thrives under the vigilant and dedicated guidance of Chief Joseph Munn. I have no doubt that Chief Munn will continue to uphold the high standards of excellence we expect in North Charleston.”
Mayor Summey remarked on retiring Chief Greg Bulanow, “Chief Bulanow’s leadership has been exemplary and instrumental in modernizing and professionalizing our fire department, and his tireless commitment to the safety and well-being of our city has paved the way for Chief Munn as his successor.”
Outgoing Fire Chief Greg Bulanow stated, “I have had the privilege of working alongside Chief Munn for many years, and I can attest to his outstanding leadership and unwavering faithfulness to the fire service. He has been an integral part of the department’s growth and success, and I am confident that he will continue to lead the department with the same dedication and excellence.”
