Keep North Charleston Beautiful Receives Funding from Keep South Carolina Beautiful to Continue Beautification Efforts

In January 2020, Keep North Charleston Beautiful received funds from Keep South Carolina Beautiful in support of local initiatives related to litter prevention, beautification, and recycling throughout North Charleston.

“Awarding Keep North Charleston Beautiful funds ensures that programs such as the Park Circle and Northwoods Butterfly Gardens, the Great American Cleanup, educational programs, free community litter cleanup kits, and volunteer events throughout North Charleston were made available to their community members. Programs and events like these help to engage community members in North Charleston,” said Keep South Carolina Beautiful State Leader, Mallory Coffey.

Funding from Keep South Carolina Beautiful allows Keep North Charleston Beautiful to provide cleanup supplies to schools, neighborhoods, and community groups throughout North Charleston. A teacher from Lambs Elementary stated that “Since we are a Title One school, there is not always money for projects like this. The donation of supplies was very helpful. Taking care of the school grounds and gardens gives all the children a sense of responsibility and ownership. They are eager and excited every day to do their part.”

Tanang Williams of The Waylyn Neighborhood Association has participated in Keep North Charleston Beautiful’s programs for several years and stated, “This serves as a catalyst to encourage residents to keep our neighborhood beautiful! We host several events throughout the year to keep the momentum going. Even amid the pandemic we promoted a “keep your own yard clean” contest because though we could not do our big community cleanups, it is still so important to keep our neighborhood clean. We look forward to being able to do our big cleanup soon, and we thank KNCB for their guidance, support, and all of the supplies!”

“I thank PalmettoPride, Keep South Carolina Beautiful, and the state legislators for the continued funding and support for Keep North Charleston Beautiful.” said Keep North Charleston Beautiful Board Chair, Veryl Sullivan. “I have volunteered for KNCB for six years and enjoy helping to keep the gardens beautiful. I also volunteer to pack litter pick up kits for neighborhoods, community groups, and schools to use when cleaning public areas. The people who come in are so appreciative of these kits that help them to keep their neighborhoods and schools beautiful and litter free.”

Keep North Charleston Beautiful was one of more than 25 organizations to receive this funding from Keep South Carolina Beautiful. Funding allows local affiliates to create beautiful public spaces, educate the public on the importance of recycling and how to recycle, and change behaviors of community members who litter.
