Honoring North Charleston’s first female officer

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Retired Lieutenant Letty Whitehead, a pioneering force in law enforcement and the first female officer of the North Charleston Police Department.

Lt. Whitehead’s remarkable career began in 1973 and spanned over two decades. While working for the North Charleston Police Department, she broke barriers as the first female detective in the County of Charleston and rose through the ranks to become the first female corporal, sergeant, and lieutenant in South Carolina. A graduate in criminology, a former Marine Corps Captain, and a leader in law enforcement, she embodied dedication and courage.

We are deeply saddened by her passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and colleagues. Lt. Whitehead’s trailblazing spirit and contributions to our community and law enforcement will never be forgotten.
