City of North Charleston collecting archival material for documentation & display

North Charleston may be a young city, but its rich past tells a tale of a transformative community made and a diverse populace. To capture the City’s past, the North Charleston Archives and History Committee was formed in 2010.

From its onset, the committee worked to establish a City History and Archive Room within North Charleston City Hall.   To date, work has been focused on developing a compilation, inventory, implementation and access system and organizing and scanning the current collection of City Archives.

To increase the archival collection, the City is making a public call for material.  The City will accept appropriate objects, maps, photographs, documents, and publications that pertain to the area’s history.  Items may be donated or photographed/scanned and returned to the owner.

Citizens interested in donating or loaning items are invited to contact the Cultural Arts Department. Cultural Arts can be reached by phone at 843-740-5854 or email at [email protected]. Office hours are 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
