Community Afterschool Programs

Afterschool Registration will begin Thursday, August 1st and continue until all afterschool community center sites are full.  The North Charleston afterschool program is designed to keep your child motivated and active afterschool while providing quality supervision and guidance.  We focus on academic enrichment and recreational activities designed to teach your child valuable leadership and life skills they can use in their everyday decision making processes.  Commitment, responsibility, socialization, creativity and physical activity are key components of the program, which ensures that children are on track to become productive citizens of society.  All afterschool sites will have the supper program offered by the Lowcountry Food Bank. For more information contact Allyson Austin at 843.740.5807 or email aaustin@northcharleston.org.

Aquatics

Danny Jones, Collins Park, Northwoods and Felix Pinckney pools and the Riverfront Park pond are all scheduled to undergo renovations this winter. Coupled with the anticipated completion of the Aquatic Center around the new year, this is a very exciting “off-season” for the Aquatics division.

Outdoor Pools at Northwoods, Collins Park and Felix Pinckney

Felix Pinckney, Northwoods Park and Collins Park pools close for the season on September 2.

New Aquatic Center

The building now has a roof and work is starting to move inside. Completion is still anticipated around the end of the year. The aquatics staff has started thinking about the completed project, advertising for lifeguards, planning programs, meeting with groups wanting to use the facility, etc. The calendar is filling up with swim meets, as word spreads about the premier aquatic center in South Carolina.

Danny Jones Pool

The North Charleston Water Mocs and SCSC, which rents space, will return to their 6-days-a-week practices after Labor Day. Other swim programs that took a break for summer, such as LAPS, will also be gearing up. The morning water aerobics class, which moved to the outdoor Felix Pinckney pool for the summer, will return to Danny Jones, and the evening class will finally have a certified instructor for the first time in many months, so we expect that program to grow.

Masters Swimming

Nine members of the Palmetto Masters Swim Team are traveling to Mission Viejo, Calif., the second week of August to swim in the US Masters Swimming National Championships. The team is also preparing to host 150 swimmers at the 6th Annual Growler Invitational on Aug. 23-25.
