What’s Happening this Month


Summer Camp

The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2020 Summer Camp registration begins on April 1, 2020.  Summer camp is for kids between the ages of 5-12 as of May 31, 2020.  We will have 19 camp sites this year.  Registration will take place at the following locations: Armory Park Community Center, Felix C. Davis Community Center at Park Circle, Felix Pinckney Community Center, Gethsemani Community Center, Jeanene Batten Community Center, Miner Crosby, North Charleston City Hall in the Recreation Department, Northwoods Park Community Center, Perry Webb Community Center, and Thomas M. Evans Sr. Community Center.  You may also register online at recreation.northcharleston.org (A fee will apply/Northwoods Park will not be available for online registration).  Registration will end when camps are full.  Sites fill up quickly so register fast. Camp runs from June 15th until August 7th from 7:30am to 5:30pm.  A late fee will be charged for campers that are picked up after 5:30pm.  The cost is $325.00 for city resident and $500.00 for each additional sibling.  Rates are for entire summer camp and includes breakfast, lunch, and all activities and field trips.  To register, you must bring the camper’s birth certificate, a current South Carolina issued driver’s license or South Carolina issued identification card, and a current bill.  Parent or guardian must be present.  For more information, please contact Allyson All at (843) 740-5807 or visit www.northcharleston.org.

Fishing Camp

Fishing Camp registration begins February 24, 2020.  Fishing camp is for children 10-16 years of age. Camp runs from June 22nd until 26th at Gary McJunkin Community Center at Collins Park.  The cost is $150 for city residents and $200 for non-residents.  Campers will have the opportunity to learn about fishing safety while becoming familiar with types of rods, reels, baits, and lures.  Campers will head to a different fishing site each day including freshwater and saltwater fishing.  Campers will need to pack a lunch, snack, and plenty of water each day.  There is a maximum of 12 campers so register quickly.  Registration must be done at City Hall in the Recreation Department.  For more information, visit www.northcharleston.org or contact Kathy Kackley at (843) 740-5805.

Children’s Festival

The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2020 Children’s Festival will take place on May 1, 2020 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Park Circle.  Pre-registration is currently under way.  This is a FREE annual event for pre-school aged students and residents.  This year’s theme is Peace, Love & Fun so grab your favorite tie dye shirt and get ready to groove!!  The day will be filled with exciting themed activities where participants will enjoy music, arts and crafts activities, jump castles and many more surprises.  Schools and Daycares that wish to attend need to register their group by April 17, 2020.  To register or for more information, contact Katrina Page at 843-740-5803 or [email protected].

Youth Athletics

Spring Baseball and Softball

Registration for Spring Baseball and Softball will be extended through till February 8th to fill in the needs in certain age groups. Registration can be done online or at one of our recreation offices.  A late fee will be accessed.

Winter Basketball

Winter basketball practices will continue to play games the month of February at the Athletic Center, River Oaks and Northwoods gyms. Games are played Monday through Thursdays and Saturdays.

The Athletic Center

The Athletic Center will continue to host youth basketball regular season games as well as pickle ball, SWAG senior women’s basketball, volleyball, karate, cheerleading and open basketball play.  Youth Athletics has put in to host some of the youth basketball district all-star tournaments at the end of February.

Middle School Sports

Middle School Basketball

Middle school basketball is underway as schools have had try-outs and teams are now being formed. This year we will have boys and girl’s teams from Morningside Middle, Northwoods Middle, Zucker Middle and Military Magnet Middle competing in our Middle School Basketball program.

Lifeguard Training

We will continue to take registrations for our three upcoming sessions of Red Cross Lifeguarding, which we expect to fill quickly, and accepting applications for seasonal lifeguards/lesson instructors.

Danny Jones Pool

In anticipation of summer and in response to demand, we are adding a limited number of group lessons to our schedule in February. These are in addition to lessons given by organizations and individuals who rent space for their own lessons. In addition, we are awaiting the arrival of new automatic doors to replace existing doors at the facility.

Youth Swim Team

February brings the beginning of championship season for our year-round swimmers. The Short Course State Championship, for which swimmers must qualify, is at the end of the month, followed in quick succession by the 8&U State Championships, Sectionals, and Palmetto Championships. For the first time, the Mocs have two swimmers qualified to compete in Sectionals, which includes the top swimmers from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and West Virginia. The Mocs hope to host some of these championships at the North Charleston Aquatic Center in the future.

Water Aerobics

Our popular year round water aerobics class continues on M/T/Th at 9:30 am for the morning session and 6:15 pm for the evening session. The cost is $20 per month. If you have any questions feel free to stop by a class at Danny Jones and talk to our instructor.

Masters Swimming

If you would like to join the team they practice M-F at 6:00 am at the Danny Jones pool. The cost is $35 per month and the team ranges in age from 18-70 years old. www.palmettomasters.org

Adult Sports

North Charleston SWAG (Senior Women’s Athletic Group)

SWAG is a program designed for women 50+ who desire the opportunity to play sports with others of their age.  Currently, the ladies meet to play 3 on 3 basketball on Wednesday mornings from 9:30am – 11:30am.  A number of the ladies also participate in our Senior Pickle Ball Program.  This program is held at the North Charleston Athletic Center located at 5794 Casper Padgett Way, North Charleston, SC 29406.  For more information email [email protected].

Note: Participants must bring in their shoes to participate.  Street worn shoes are not permitted on the courts at the Athletic Center.

Senior Pickle Ball

If you are interested in playing or learning to play pickle ball, we have the opportunity for you!  Join our seniors as they pplay the fastest growing sport in the country!  Pickle Ball is played at the North Charleston Athletic Center Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weekly, from 9am – 11:30pm and at the Danny Jones Gymnasium on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the same times.

The winter season for Co-Ed Kickball will begin at Ingevity WestRock Park.   Games are played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning at 6:35pm. To join the next league for the spring season, please visit our registration site at www.charlestonssc.com.

Flag Football

The winter Adult Co-Ed Flag Football league will kickoff play at Ingevity WestRock Park through the first week of February.  Games begin at 6:30pm each Monday night.  Come check out Monday Night Football in North Charleston!  For information on the spring league, visit www.charlestonssc.com.

Senior Men’s Softball

If you are 50+ and interested in playing senior softball, we have the program for you!  A morning and evening league is offered.  Games are played Monday – Wednesday at Ingevity WestRock Park.  For more information, please e-mail [email protected].

Co-Ed Softball

The fall season for Adult Co-Ed Softball is in full swing. Games begin at 10am each Sunday morning and are played at Lent’s Field.  For information on joining the winter league, visit www.charlestonssc.com.

Adult Tennis 

The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.

Tennis Clinics/Lessons

The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available.  Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously.  Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6pm.  Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm.  For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.

Fly Dog Fitness

The North Charleston Recreation Department and “Fly Dog Fitness” have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make “North Charleston More Physically Fit”!  Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area.  Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can’t remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.

We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence…all while getting an invigorating workout.

Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston’s most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Thomas Evans CC Seniors

Chair Exercise
Chair Exercise is held each Friday at 10am.  All seniors are invited to come take part in this low impact exercise program.

Men’s Coffee Gathering
Calling all Senior Men!  Join us each Wednesday morning beginning at 10am for coffee and fellowship.

ZUMBA Gold at Thomas M. Evans, Sr. Community Center

This class is designed for Seniors and is held on Tuesday mornings.  For more information call, (843) 760-4289.

“Senior Sneakers”

Join us as we “Walk the Circle” at our leisure!  Log your laps inside the community center at the receptionist desk and become eligible for Incentive Prizes for walking milestones.  Registration is required for this FREE program.  Men and women 50+ years of age are eligible to take part.  registration is continuous!

Senior Water Aerobics

Registration for Senior Water Aerobics .  Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Self Defense

A Self-Defense class is now being held at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle each Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, contact Wanda Hiers at (843) 745-1028.

Senior Line Dancing (class registration is continuous)

Each Monday morning at Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 9:30 am – 11:00 am.  Classes in December will be held at Armory Park due to Christmas Festivities at Park Circle.


This very low impact senior exercise class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 10:00 am – 11:00 am.

Annual Events


Pitch, Hit and Run

This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league.
