Aquatics

Youth Swim Team

The North Charleston Water Mocs participated in their first long course meet in team history the first weekend of May in Charleston. The 27 young athletes were pleasantly surprised by their performances in the 50-meter pool. The team will have plenty of opportunities to swim in a “big pool” in the future as the new aquatic center’s resident youth team.

Danny Jones

Danny Jones continues to be a popular destination for recreational swimmers. On Sunday, May 26, 294 people paid the $1 entrance fee to the facility within a three-hour period.

The morning water aerobics class, having found an instructor after several months of searching, found new life. Attendance in the class, which meets three mornings a week, doubled from 6 regular participants to 12 and continues to grow. (The evening class is still looking for an instructor.)

The LAPS program finished its lessons with students from Charleston’s Title I schools for this school year in late May.

Aquatic Center

The two bulkheads for the competition pool arrived and were installed this month. After a brief delay, installation of the building’s steel beams also got underway.

Aquatics

With a full staff of lifeguards, cashiers and swim aids trained for the summer, the aquatics staff prepared Felix Pinckney, Collins Park and Northwoods pools for opening weekends staring May 25. The first weekend, three guards at Northwoods – Jordan Stover, Jackson Zeron and Michael Brunet – each saved distressed swimmers.

Swim lesson sign-ups started May 1 and continued through the month, with several sessions filling quickly. Lessons are offered for babies as young as 6 months (Parent/Tot classes), with regular swim classes starting at age 3. Classes start June 10.

On May 30, the aquatics staff finished and submitted a bid to U.S. Masters Swimming “selling” North Charleston and the new aquatic center as a great location for the 2021 National Long Course Championship. The 26-page document included support letters from Mayor Summey, descriptions of area accommodations, dining and attractions, and photos of the construction from ground-breaking to the last week of May. Although we face several obstacles (the building is under construction, next year’s meet is in Richmond, Va.), we remain hopeful. The announcement will be made in September.
