Summer Arts Camps

Summer Arts Camps are offered in June and July for children ages 5-13. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. A minimum of 10 registered students are required for the camps to take place. Registration ends one week prior to each camp. The camp registration form is available for download from the Applications & Registration Forms page. All camps take place from 8:30am-5:00pm at the Olde Village Community Building at 4820 Jenkins Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405. The fee per child is $100 per camp. which includes lunch and 2 snacks daily.

Arts Camp I: Visual Art & Drama (Ages 5-8) – June 8 – 12, 8:30am-5:00pm
Visual Arts: Taught by the City’s Artist-in-Residence, Katherine Hester.  Young artists will explore a variety of art mediums while learning about different famous artists.  This week will include the basics of drawing using shape, line, and value to create realistic drawings in graphite, pastel, and oil pastel. Students will also discover the liquidity of acrylic paint by learning pouring techniques and creating their own mini pour masterpieces. Students will learn the basics of drawing portraits and create their own self portrait using acrylic paint on canvas board to take home and enjoy!
Drama: Taught by local theatre director and instructor Anicia Brown.  Participants will learn the basics of theatre including stage acting, theatrical movement (dance) and singing, theatre etiquette, and teamwork.  Acting and improvisation games and exercises will help students prepare skits, monologues, and dances for a short recital at the end of the camp. This is a fun, playful class!  No textbook or homework other than memorization will be expected.

Arts Camp III: Music (Piano) & Dance (Hip Hop) (Ages 5-8) – July 13 – 17, 8:30am-5:00pm
Music: Taught by local music professional and certified music teacher Jarrard Coleman. Campers will explore a variety of basic musicianship and piano fundamentals, such as reading notes and rhythms, on electric keyboards.  Over the course of the week participants will also learn to play alone and in a group setting.  Students will have the opportunity to record their performances for family and friends to enjoy.  The basics of recording technology will also be discussed.  All equipment will be provided, but students may bring their own personal keyboard if desired.
Dance: Taught by local dance instructor, Alex Dixon, this class requires a willingness to get moving and have fun while doing it. Students will learn the fundamentals of stretching, dance, and rhythm.  Children will also be able to develop their own dance names and be a part of a dance finale dance video shot and edited by the instructor.

Arts Camp IV: Music (Guitar) & Dance (Hip Hop) (Ages 9-13) – July 27 – 31, 8:30am-5:00pm
Music: Taught by local musician and teacher Kimberly Krauk and titled “Music Mash-Up,” students will love learning and experimenting with various types of instruments from found objects as seen on the Broadway show “STOMP” to learning the basics of acoustic guitar.  By the end of the week, they will be able to play at least one song on guitar, “make rain” with percussion instruments, and perform a short STOMP show for parents, friends, and relatives.  This class is fast-paced, fun, and focuses on building teamwork, leadership, and listening skills.  All materials will be provided, but students may bring their own guitars if they have them.
