North Charleston Commits To A Cleaner South Carolina
Mayor Keith Summey supports PalmettoPride's Prideways program

North Charleston, SC - Private dollars continue to assist PalmettoPride's efforts to clean up South Carolina. PalmettoPride and the City of North Charleston have teamed up to encourage local businesses to get actively involved in the fight against litter by participating in the Prideways program.

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey secured new Prideways sponsors for the program. The new Prideways sponsorships will be made public on Charleston County's interstate highways during the next two months. Local sponsors include: Center Plate, Fennell Container Company, Fox TV, Gramling Brothers, Muhler Company, North Charleston Coliseum, and SC Education Lottery.

“The PalmettoPride organization is truly making a difference in South Carolina,” said Mayor Keith Summey. “Their Prideways program is one of the most effective and innovative programs in our state. As mayor, I am determined to recruit businesses in North Charleston to get involved in Prideways.”

The Prideways program is a public/private partnership to lead clean up efforts on interstate highways.  The program, sponsored by PalmettoPride, the South Carolina Department of Transportation and the South Carolina Department of Corrections, allows businesses, organizations and individuals to sponsor sections of interstates throughout the state.  Each sponsor receives a recognition sign that is placed along the highway to acknowledge the efforts of their organization.

"Fennell Container Company has a long and proud history deeply rooted in South Carolina.  For years, we have remained true to our goal of enhancing and protecting the environment by providing top quality waste services to our customers,” said Dave Bevacqua, General Manager, Fennell Container Company.   “As a supporter of the PalmettoPride campaign, we are extremely pleased with the results.  We encourage others to join in the campaign and show how much we care about South Carolina and the environment.”

Segments available for sponsorship are approximately two miles long.  Prideways sponsors pay a monthly sponsorship fee of $365 that covers bi-monthly inmate labor to clean up the sponsored segment. The Prideways program helps to defray costs to the South Carolina Department of Correction's statewide inmate litter pickup project.

Litter has a serious, negative effect on the economy and image of South Carolina. PalmettoPride is an umbrella organization that is leading the effort to make the state litter free by unifying citizens, state agencies, law enforcement, the private sector, statewide media, local organizations and Keep South Carolina Beautiful and its local affiliates.  For additional information on PalmettoPride, call toll-free at 1-877-725-7733 or visit www.palmettopride.org.
