Citizen of the Year
Each year North Charleston citizens are nominated to identify, honor and reinforce the activities of exceptional caring citizens whose service or performance positively contributes to the quality of life in North Charleston.  Nominees must possess and demonstrate a generous community spirit, prove his or her commitment and has a reoccurring pattern of effort directed toward the community, and is a role model in the community and thereby raises the standards of social responsibility.

Tom Reiss
2009 Citizen of the Year

Mr. Reiss, a retired Navy veteran, has been a resident of North Charleston for 30 years.  Throughout his years in North Charleston, he has distinguished himself through outstanding service to his neighborhood and community.

Mr. Reiss has served 10 years as Neighborhood President of the Forest Hills 1 Subdivision, on the City's Board of Zoning Appeals, the Citizen Advisory Council, the Mayor's Commission of Tourism and has been instrumental in organizing and implementing the National Night Out for two consecutive years.  Mr. Reiss also remains proactive in assisting the City's Code Enforcement Department, working one on one with inspectors to address quality of life issues in his neighborhood.

For these reasons and many more, we are proud to honor Tom Reiss as the 2009 North Charleston Citizen of the Year.
