As part of the ongoing activities sponsored by the Municipal Association of South Carolina, North Charleston is officially declaring its commitment to economic success and a positive business climate.

Cities Mean Business offers the City of North Charleston a unique opportunity to celebrate the important relationship between North Charleston and its local business community.  Cities and towns all over the state are highlighting the contributions that strong cities make to build a strong economy that supports local businesses.

According to the Municipal Association of South Carolina, cities and towns are the core of economic growth and prosperity for our state.  The success of our state’s economic development efforts is dependent on the strength of our cities and towns to provide the quality services and amenities taxpayers and businesses demand.

Leading a strong, pro-business government is essential in stimulating and maintaining a robust local economy and the ability to preserve a strong economy leads to necessary increased quality of life.  Working closely with our state legislators gives us an opportunity to encourage business friendly legislation that our working class benefits from the most.

Over the past year, in spite of a national downturn in the national economy, major industries and businesses have located in North Charleston. North Charleston had the privilege of welcoming well over 1000 new jobs to the City in 2007, giving citizens access to high paying jobs.

The City’s ever increasing role in the Lowcountry’s tourism industry was seen last year with $79.6 million of total economic impact for the Charleston area generated by the Convention Center Complex and the visitors it serves.  To meet the increasing demand of visitors to the Lowcountry, 7 new hotels were added in 2007 with another 5 hotels planned for 2008 all averaging over 100 rooms.

Also, North Charleston has been South Carolina’s retail sales leader for fifteen consecutive years.  The last report received totaled $6.51 billion with North Charleston surpassing Columbia (2nd in State retail sales) by $800 million.
