The Public Safety Division, under the direction of Chief Jon R. Zumalt, is comprised of the Police and Fire Departments. Both departments work in a coordinated effort to ensure that citizens and visitors will be safe and protected in the event of an emergency. The City of North Charleston is part of the countywide Emergency Communications System (E-911), which facilitates quick response to fire and other emergency situations.
Fire
The North Charleston Fire Department is comprised of approximately 220 individuals in 11 stations involved in fire suppression and fire inspection/prevention programs for the City. A very thorough, rigid and scheduled program of training is conducted daily at the training facility, which enables the Fire Department to provide exceptionally trained personnel to the City.
Police
The North Charleston Police Department presently employs over 300 officers and 100 support personnel. It's mission is to provide professional public safety services while working in partnership with the citizens of North Charleston to identify, prevent and solve the problems of crime, social disorder and neighborhood decay, thereby improving the quality of life in our community.
Disaster Preparedness
The Charleston County Emergency Preparedness Division (EPD) provides leadership and assistance to reduce the loss of life and property in Charleston County from a variety of man-made and natural hazards through an effective emergency management program.
