FIREFIGHTER
Under regular supervision, receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls as required, and performs the necessary functions and operations to efficiently and effectively protect the lives and property of those in need of assistance. Operates fire apparatus at the scene of emergencies and provides medical assistance at the First Responder, EMT or Paramedic level as certified. Performs related work as required. Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in fire service or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must complete required coursework and maintain Interior Structural Firefighter and other certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy. Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Must possess CPR and First Aid certification; may be required to possess EMT or Paramedic certification. Entry Level Salary $26,401.00
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II
Under occasional supervision, operates a variety of heavy and light equipment and trucks in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of City properties, which may include grounds, roads and bridges, rights-of-way and/or drainage structures, or in the collection and disposal of solid waste materials. Performs related work as required. Reports to assigned supervisor. Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by one to two years of experience in heavy equipment operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state CDL Class “A” driver’s license. Entry Level Salary $24,876.00
DIRECTOR OF PLANNING
Plans, directs and supervises the activities and programs of the Planning and Management Department. Effectively and efficiently implements public policy affecting the logical, sound growth and management of North Charleston through comprehensive planning. Advises City management, other departments, City Council, Planning Commission and other boards and committees on planning and development issues. Compiles and analyzes data into reports concerning population, land use, housing, transportation, and natural, historic and cultural resources. Requires a Master’s degree in city/regional planning or public administration supplemented by six to nine years of local government planning experience, some of which have been in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. CITY PLANNER
Performs professional work in the research and development of long-range plans and programs for community design, growth and development. Assists with neighborhood and City-wide planning functions, such as neighborhood development plans, economic development plans, urban thoroughfare plans and other long-term projects. Assists in the development of the City’s Comprehensive Development Plan. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture or related field supplemented by two to three years of local government planning experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. PROJECT MANAGER
Develops implements and updates various development plans. Executes and manages multiple projects, including project planning, coordination and progress reviews; ensures project compliance with established goals and objectives and all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety. Monitors the completion of project deliverables; revises plans as necessary. Participates in the selection and coordination of project consultants and team members. Assists in coordinating planning programs and projects with various City departments, government agencies, planning organizations, community groups and the private sector as appropriate. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in city/regional planning, construction management, public administration or related field supplemented by five to six years of local government planning experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. BATTALION CHIEF
Ensures subordinate personnel are trained in required courses; participates in training and testing as appropriate. Plans and conducts of training activities and insures the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date training records. Must be knowledgeable of training methods and have the ability to instruct others through explanation, demonstration and supervised practice. Must have knowledge in the areas of fire science, hydraulics, electrical, mechanics, fire codes and ordinances, pre-fire planning, fire investigation, training, etc. Be able to function effectively within all sectors of the incident command system. Minimum requirements: Associate’s degree, with emphasis in fire science or a closely related field, supplemented by five years of progressive experience and training in fire service programs, including experience as a Fire Captain/Battalion Chief or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be certified as a South Carolina Fire Academy Adjunct or Academy Certified Instructor NFPA Fire Officer I. COURT CLERK—Part time
Assists the Deputy Clerk of Court, Clerk of Court and judges by performing routine to moderately complex clerical and customer service work. Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by nine to twelve months of general clerical or administrative work, preferably in a legal / court environment.
