The North Charleston Geographic Information System (GIS) is a city wide spatial information resource that provides for the needs of various city departments, multiple city services, local government entities, and the general public. The city's GIS employees are responsible for the design, creation, organization, and implementation of a variety of digital geographic data layers and related information. GIS employees also coordinate data between departments, other local government agencies, engineers, contractors, and the general public.

Primary functions and projects include:

• The design and implementation of a citywide GIS system using ESRI's ArcGIS and ArcIMS
• Redrawing of the city's council district boundaries
• Assistance with 2003 stormwater utility fee database design and data collection
• Address database design and implementation
• Internal mapping website design
• Centerline maintenance and attribute update
• Parcel data updates and maintenance for city use (official copies maintained by County)
• Support of departmental use of GIS data
• Provide digital and hard copy maps as requested
• Database design and application development
• GIS training and technical assistance
