VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMS 2008/2009 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE:
MICHAEL MORRISON
Each year the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department contracts with a professional visual artist who possesses unique skills, talents, and experiences for the School Outreach Program. The Artist-In-Residence is allotted 12-15 hours of project time per school at a minimum of two-hour increments.
The 2008-2009 City of North Charleston Artist-in-Residence is Michael Morrison. Michael is a North Carolina native and spent his childhood years in Oregon and Georgia. Morrison received his BA in art from the College of Charleston and his MFA from Georgia Southern University. While working at Georgia Southern, he had the opportunity to teach several classes. After finishing school, he worked in an art foundry in the Northeast. Deciding that he enjoyed the climate better in his adopted Charleston, Morrison returned to pursue his art. Since his return, Morrison has traveled to Guatemala where he spent some time teaching children. He has also taught at both the College of Charleston and the Gibbes Museum of Art. He currently works from his studio on Johns Island, SC. Michael has exhibited his work in Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Those familiar with Morrison’s highly geometric abstract mixed media sculptures might be surprised by this figurative body of work. He credits Charleston’s people and proximity to the sea for this change. As happens to many who live here, he is drawn to explore all the promise that the Lowcountry holds. Each of the pieces contains the face of someone in the Charleston area. While the rendering is less than traditional, the works evoke the feeling of portraits of family and friends.
Michael’s artwork will be on display at the North Charleston City Gallery in December, 2008. As in years past, there will be a School Liaison/Art Teacher Reception on Thursday, December 4 from 5- 7 pm, where representatives from the area schools are invited to meet and greet the artist. Door prizes are given and we encourage teachers to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity for a visual artist-in-residence to work with their students.
Michael is excited to offer three-dimensional, sculpture-based projects to the students in North Charleston. Art teachers or school liaisons may initiate the request for FREE services by the AIR by completing and returning the VA-Form in the School Resource Book. To ensure the Artist-In-Residence is able to accommodate and serve all of the North Charleston schools, all project requests should be placed at least two weeks in advance with residences completed by the end of May, 2009. | |
