Judged Art juror: Frank C. Martin, II
We are pleased to announce the Juror for this exhibition is curator, writer, and educator Frank C. Martin, II. Mr. Martin is a graduate of Yale University and the City University of New York, Hunter College, with undergraduate and graduate degrees specializing in the history of art and aesthetics. His past experience includes employment in the Division of Education Services of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, serving as a contributing critic in the fine arts for The Post & Courier, and serving over 12 years as Curator of Exhibitions & Collections of the I.P. Stanback Museum at SC State University in Orangeburg, SC. Mr. Martin currently teaches the history of art at SC State University and at the Salkehatchie extension of the University of South Carolina, Allendale, and is the Executive Consultant for Curatorial Affairs of the McCrory Galleri located in Columbia, SC. He has presented scholarly research on the history of art and culture in diverse international fora and is a member in good standing of the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art (AICA), an international association of art critics based in Paris, France, and New York, New York.

La’Ron Peace, winner of the 2009 North Charleston Arts Festival Design Competition, will display several abstract mixed media pieces. His winning design, “Splash,” will be featured in the exhibition.

‘The Nano Show’ will feature contemporary works in a variety of mediums and subjects created by several local artists and high school students. As the title of the exhibit suggests, all of the pieces are created on a small scale - none exceeding a square foot.

EXPLORING TEXTILE ART BY AFRICAN AMERICANS

Artists explore and depict their African heritage through cloth using a variety of traditional to non-traditional quilting techniques, including the use of indigo in the art of batik. Featured works pay homage to Harriet Powers, considered the great grandmother of art quilting. Co-presented with the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs & the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Co-curated by Catherine Lamkin and Arianne King Comer. The Opening Reception on Saturday, May 2, will feature music by Ann Caldwell. (See weekly schedule for related events.)

Local textile artists Cookie Washington and Catherine Lamkin exhibit quilts inspired by works that they contributed to the Washington Historical Society’s exhibition commemorating the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Essays by elementary school students from The Dream Realized! essay & picture competition will also be on display. Students were asked to submit pictures and essays that reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream and how they perceive the realization of his dream.

Constructed by the College of Charleston’s Level 3 sculpture class, this work of art, made from recycled materials, is meant to create awareness of recyclable products and to generate respect and appreciation for water as a source of life.

North Charleston Artist-in-Residence Michael Morrison worked with children at the Carolina Youth Development Center to create totem poles made of steel, paint, and recycled materials from auditorium chairs. The totems illustrate how the children at the facility are each others’ family and support systems while they are away from home.
