What's Happening this Month


Veterans Day

The City of North Charleston will host its annual Veterans Day tribute on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm at Park Circle featuring a keynote by CPT. Geno F. Paluso, II, US Navy. We ask veterans and the public to join Mayor Keith Summey and City Council in this special ceremony.  Each year, over 500 veterans in attendance are honored.

All veterans in attendance will be recognized and will receive a specially designed commemorative coin. To receive a coin, veterans are urged to RSVP no later than November 4 to (843) 740-5801, (843) 745-1028 or via email at cdambaugh@northcharleston.org.

Prior to the ceremony, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am, a story swap will be held in the Felix Davis Community Center.  Veterans will have an open opportunity to share memories and stories about their service with fellow veterans.  The story swap is open to the public.  Veterans wishing to speak should RSVP to (843) 740-5854.

In addition, the 1st Combat Camera Squadron will provide photo and video displays from the perspective of the Air Force during past wartime strategic, operational, worldwide crises, contingencies, joint exercises and humanitarian operations.  The 1st Combat Camera Squadron is a tenant unit at Joint Base Charleston, and the largest active duty combat camera unit in the Air Force. Combat Camera acquires still and motion imagery in support of classified and unclassified air, sea, and ground military operations.

Lunch for all event attendees will be provided immediately following the ceremony with the Charleston County School of the Arts Jazz Band performing during the luncheon.

The Department of Defense and the Veterans Day National Committee once again selected North Charleston as a Regional Site for Veterans Day 2017.  North Charleston is one of two regional sites in the State of South Carolina and has received this designation for 7 consecutive years.

Winter Wonderland

The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s Winter Wonderland will take place on November 29th, 30th, and December 1st from 9:00am-1:30pm at Armory Park.  This is a free preschool event that features a visit with Santa, arts and crafts, music room, inflatables and much more!  To register or request permission slips, contact Allyson Austin at (843) 740-5807.  Pre-registration is required by groups and individuals no later than November 18, 2016.  Each child must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.  

Youth Programs

Community Center Afterschool Program

Afterschool Registration registration continues continue until all afterschool community center sites are filled to capacity.  The North Charleston afterschool program is designed to keep your child motivated and active afterschool while providing quality supervision and guidance.  We focus on academic enrichment and recreational activities designed to teach your child valuable leadership and life skills they can use in their everyday decision making processes.  Commitment, responsibility, socialization, creativity and physical activity are key components of the program which ensures that children are on track to become productive citizens of society.  All afterschool sites will have the supper program offered by the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Veterans Day

 The City of North Charleston’s Veteran’s Day event will be held November 10 at 10:30am at Park Circle.  The Recreation Department’s Afterschool Programs will host their annual Essay Contest and Poster Contest.  Each Afterschool Program site will submit a poster that represents the theme “A Salute to Veterans.”  Students are welcome to submit essays that depict the theme “Veterans are important because…”  The essay winners will be invited to read their essay at the Veterans Day event.  The winning poster will be displayed at the event.



Water Aerobics

Our popular year round water aerobics class continues on Mondat, Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 am for the morning session and 6:00 pm for the evening session. The cost is $20 per month. If you have any questions feel free to stop by a class and talk to our instructor Catherine Dixon.

Youth Swim Team

Information about the City of North Charleston youth swim team can be found at www.watermocs.com. You can find information about fees, pool location, practice times, coaches, age(s), equipment needed, meet schedule and much more. The minimum age is 6 years old and kids must be able to swim a minimum of 25 yards freestyle and 25 yards backstroke to be considered for the team for safety and competitive reasons. Practice started in September but athletes can join throughout the year.

Adult Water Polo

North Charleston will be offering Water Polo at the Danny Jones pool for the first time! Adults practice Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:15pm – 8:15pm and Saturdays 10am – 12pm. The cost is $30 per month. For more information you can contact Bora Yatagan. byatagan@northcharleston.org

Masters Swim Team

If you would like to join the team they practice Monday - Friday at 6am at the Danny Jones pool. The cost is $35 per month and the team ranges in age from 18-70. www.palmettomasters.org

Youth Athletics

Football and Cheerleading

This year we will have a all-star team in 7/8, 9/10 and 11/12 year old age divisions. We will be hosting the 11/12 all-star game on November 28 at Danny Jones. The 9/10 year old will be playing in Orangeburg their first round. The 7/8 are waiting to hear who they will play as they have already advanced to lower state.

Cheerleading will conclude their season with a cheer off on November 8th at Northwoods gym. This night the cheerleaders will be able to show everyone what they have learned this year. 


 The U8 year old division will conclude their season with in house post season tournaments on November 6 and 7 at River Oaks. The U10, U12 and U15 divisions will pick all-star teams and play in tournaments starting November 16. This year we will be hosting the U12 division at River Oaks.

Fall Baseball and Softball

The fall baseball and softball season will conclude with post season tournaments for some age divisions. High seeded teams will be home and host team. Our teams are playing again in the lowcountry league against teams from other recreation departments. Home games are played at Wescott and Pepperhill Parks.

Middle School Athletics


Registration for Middle School Basketball for boys and girls will be held during the month of November.  Students can register at the school they attend; Deer Park Middle, Morningside Middle, Northwoods Middle, Military Magnet Academy and Zucker Middle Schools.


The Middle School Volleyball League are playing their games Mondays through Thursdays throughout the season.

Men's Senior Softball

The fall season for Co-Ed Adult Kickball will continue play at Ingevity-Kapstone.   Kickball sees competitive play on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Ingevity-Kapstone Park beginning at 6:30pm.  To join the next league in the winter, please visit our registration site at www.charlestonssc.com.

Flag Football

The fallAdult Co-Ed Flag Football is playing at River Oaks Complex. Games begin at 6:30pm each Monday night.  Come check out Monday Night Football in North Charleston!

Co-Ed Softball

The fall season for Adult Co-Ed Softball continues play.  Games begin at 10am each Sunday morning and are played at Lent's Field.

Adult Tennis

The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.

Tennis Clinics/Lessons

The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available.  Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously.  Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6pm.  Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm.  For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.

Fly Dog Fitness

The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"!  Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area.  Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.

We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.

Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Morning classes meet on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 5:30am - 6:30am; Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6am - 7am.  Evening class meets Tuesdays from 6pm - 7pm.  All levels are welcome!   For more information, visit Fly Dog Fitness on the web at www.flydogfitness.com

Pickleball 101

All Seniors are invited to come out and play the new and exciting game of PICKLEBALL, Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays at 7pm at the Danny Jones Complex.

3 on 3 Basketball

Bring your game, bring your team and join us as we build our 3 on 3 basketball league. Individuals and teams are encouraged to register and participate.  Join us at Northwoods Gym, 8348 Greenridge Rd., Tuesday, 10:30am-12:30pm and/or Danny Jones Gym, 1455 Monitor St., Thursday, 10am-12pm

Disaster Kit Distibution

In cooperation with Emergency Operations and Disaster Preparedness, the JOY program will be distributing disaster kits and Hurricane preparedness information throughout senior programs.  For more information, call Belinda Swindler at (843) 745-1028. 

Thomas Evans CC Seniors

Chair Exercise
Chair Exercise is held each Friday at 10am.  All seniors are invited to come take part in this low impact exercise program.

Men's Coffee Gathering
Calling all Senior Men!  Join us each Wednesday morning beginning at 10am for coffee and fellowship.

Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing continues on Thursdays at 7pm, at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.   This class is designed for all ages including seniors.

"Senior Sneakers"

Join us as we "Walk the Circle" at our leisure!  Log your laps inside the community center at the receptionist desk and become eligible for Incentive Prizes for walking milestones.  Registration is required for this FREE program.  Men and women 50+ years of age are eligible to take part.  registration is continuous!

Senior Water Aerobics

Registration for Senior Water Aerobics .  Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Self Defense

A Self-Defense class is now being held at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle each Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, contact Belinda swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Classes at Park Circle

Kelli offers a Tuesday and Thursday evening class at 5:30 pm-6:30 pm.  Cost is $5 per class.  For more information, call Belinda Swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Gold at Thomas M. Evans, Sr. Community Center

This class is designed for Seniors and is held on Tuesday mornings.  For more information call, (843) 760-4289.

Senior Line Dancing (class registration is continuous)

Each Monday morning at Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 9:30 am - 11:00 am.  Classes in December will be held at Armory Park due to Christmas Festivities at Park Circle.


This very low impact senior exercise class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

"JOY” Table Tennis

"Joy Bocce"

"Joy Tappers" Basic Tap Lessons

Annual Events


Pitch, Hit and Run

This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league.
