Youth Athletics are provided for North Charleston residents. Participants must play in the area in which they reside. However, non-residents may register provided neither state nor national affiliations have rules prohibiting non-resident participation. The NCRD Staff assigns non-residents to an area for participation and an additional $30 registration fee is charged. This applies to all Youth Athletic programs.

A parent or legal guardian is required at registration and must provide the child’s birth certificate, proof of accident insurance, proof of residence and payment of all fees. Cash is not accepted at registration; only checks, money orders or cashier checks are accepted.

SUMMER BASKETBALL

Games begin in early June and are played on weeknights. The Recreation Department provides each participant with a game shirt.

WINTER BASKETBALL

ages: 4–6 Co-Ed, 7–8 Co-Ed, 9–10 Boys & Girls, 11–12 Boys & Girls, 13–14 Boys & Girls, 15–17 Boys & Girls as of September 1, 2014

Practices are held during the month of December and the season begins in early January. Games are played on weeknights and Saturdays and each participant will receive a pair of shorts and a shirt.

SPRING BASEBALL

The season begins the 2nd week of April. Each participant receives a uniform that includes a pair of pants, socks, a shirt and a hat. All participants must provide their own glove, cleats and batting helmet with face mask and chinstrap.

CHEERLEADING

ages: 6–13 as of September 1, 2014

Cheerleading teams represent their neighborhoods and cheer for the football teams that represent the same area. This is neither a traveling nor a competitive cheerleading program. All games are played on weeknights and on Saturdays.

FALL BASEBALL

The Lowcountry Fall League is designed for players who want to improve their skills or explore the league they wish to play in next spring. Players will receive a shirt, socks, pants, and hat. Teams have the opportunity to play in a mid-season baseball tournament hosted by the North Charleston Recreation Department. Each team also competes in a post-season tournament. No Fall travel players are allowed to play according to Lowcountry League by-laws.

FALL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

ages:10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under
tournament fee: $250.00 per team

This annual event is held October 9-12, 2014

Awards are presented to the 1st and 2nd place teams.

FLAG FOOTBALL

ages: 5 and 6 as of September 1, 2014

This program is designed to introduce youth to the game of football. The games will be conducted on abbreviated fields. The Recreation Department will provide a game jersey, shorts and socks.

TACKLE FOOTBALL

ages/weight limits: 7–14 as of September 1, 2014
There is no weight limit for participation, but there is a weight limit for positions that can handle the football. They include: 7-8 (85 lbs), 9-10 (135 lbs), 11-12 (150 lbs), 13-14 (no limit)

Participants must provide their own equipment including all pads, pants, cleats, and a helmet; however, each player does receive a game jersey and socks. All games are played on weeknights and on Saturdays. Each player must play in their age classification.

HERSHEY TRACK & FIELD GAMES

ages: 9-14 as of August 1, 2014
registration: Month of April -Participants can register at their respective schools.
registration fee: Free location: Danny Jones Sports Complex.

This program allows participants to sign up for two events. Events include individual running distances, 4x100 meter relay, long jump and softball throw.

PITCH, HIT & RUN

ages: 7-14
location(s): Pepperhill Park
registration fee: Free

This competition, held in April, encourages participation and emphasizes the fun of baseball with a focus on skills. Each local winner advances to sectional competition with the opportunity to move onto Regional’s and onto MLB All-Star game to compete in finals.

PUNT, PASS, & KICK

ages: 8–13 Boys & Girls
registration: No registration needed
registration fee: Free

This program, held in October, allows youth to display their ability to launch a football by utilizing the three primary ball handling skills involved in the game. Local winners will advance to a sectional competition with an opportunity to advance to the Nationals held at an NFL game.

SOCCER

ages: U-6, U-8, U-10, U-12, U-15 as of September 1, 2014
registration: Month of July

The Soccer League begins in late September. The NCRD staff is responsible for assigning players to teams within the area that they reside. Players receive a pair of shorts, socks and a game jersey, and are responsible for providing their own shin guards and cleats. Soccer games are played on weeknights and Saturdays.

LSYSA SOCCER

ages: U-9, U-10, U-11, U-12, U-13, U-14, and U-15 as of August 1, 2014. Teams will be formed based on number of players registered within each age group.

The LSYSA, Lower State Youth Soccer Association, is a competitive soccer league beginning in late August. All LSYSA teams are eligible to compete in weekend tournaments that are played on Saturdays and compete against other LSYSA teams from around the Lowcountry. It is recommended that each player in this league have at least 1 year of playing experience. Practices are held during the week and on Sundays and an additional uniform cost of $75 is also required.
