Happening In April 2016

Youth Programs

Summer Camp

Summer camp is quickly approaching and the deadline to register is approaching.  Registration for summer camp ends April 29, 2016.  Summer camp is for kids between the ages of 5-12 as of May 31, 2016.  We will have 19 camp sites this year.  You may register at the following locations: Armory Park Community Center, Felix C. Davis Community Center at Park Circle, Felix Pinckney Community Center, Gethsemani Community Center, Jeanene Batten Community Center, Miner Crosby, North Charleston City Hall in the Rec Department, Northwoods Park Community Center, Perry Webb Community Center, and Thomas M. Evans Sr. Community Center.  Sites are filling up quickly so register fast. Camp runs from June 9 until August 5 from 7:30am to 5:30pm.  A late fee will be charged for campers that are picked up after 5:30pm.  The cost is $275.00 for city resident and 250.00 for each additional sibling.  The cost for non-residents is $400.00 and 375.00 for each additional sibling.  Rates are for entire summer camp and includes breakfast, lunch, and all activities and field trips.  To register, you must bring a current South Carolina issued driver’s license or South Carolina issued identification card and a current bill.  For more information, please call (843) 740-5807 or visit www.northcharleston.org.   

Children's Festival

We have begun the pre-registration for the City of North Charleston Recreation Department Children’s Festival event, which is a major component of the annual North Charleston Arts Festival.  The event will take place on Friday, May 6 from 9:00am to 1:00pm.  This is a FREE annual event for pre-school aged students and residents.  This year’s theme is Under the Sea!  The day will be filled with exciting themed activities where participants will enjoy music, arts and crafts activities, jump castles and many more surprises.  Published singer-songwriter and children’s entertainer, Rick Hubbard, will take the stage with his show “Who Can Do It?  I Can!”.  Schools and Daycare facilities that wish to attend need to register their group by April 22, 2016.  To register or for more information, contact Katrina Page at 843-740-5803 or kpage@northcharleston.org

Afterschool Program

Afterschool Registration has started and will resume until all afterschool community center sites are full to capacity.  Academic enrichment and recreational activities are being offered during the 2015-2016 afterschool program year.  New this year for all afterschool sites is the supper program offered by the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Swim Lessons

It is time to mark your calendar for swim lessons.  Danny Jones, Northwoods, and Felix Pinckney pools are offering morning classes. We expect to serve a record number of residents this summer.  The cost is $30 residents/$60 non-residents with registration starting the May 2.   For more information about registration, please contact Armory Park (843) 745 1032 and Northwoods Park (843) 572 5410

North Charleston Swim Club

The North Charleston Swim Club sent (6) athletes to the 8 and under State Meet in Greenville, SC in March.  All of our swimmers placed in the top-10 and we had (6) second place finishes.  If you are interested in joining the team, stop by practice at 4:00 PM any weekday at the Danny Jones pool.

Palmetto Masters

Palmetto Masters which includes adults from the Danny Jones and other pools in the area will be sending 78 athletes to the National Championships held in Greensboro, NC at the end of April.  They will compete against nearly 2,000 other adults from 200 swim teams around the country.  If you would like to join our masters swim team, the cost is 30.00 per month and they practice at 6:00 am M-F at the Danny Jones pool.

Lifeguard Positions

City of North Charleston is currently accepting applications for summer lifeguarding positions. To be considered for a lifeguard position you must have American Lifeguard Certification. For Lifeguard Training classes, please contact Bora Yatagan 843-697-4140 or byatagan@northcharleston.org.

Pools Open for Summer
Get Your Pool Pass

Felix Pinckney Pool, Northwoods Park Pool and Collins Park will open for the summer season on Memorial Day Weekend. The winter/spring pool pass is now available for purchase at the Armory.  For residents the cost is 30.00 individual/50.00 family.  This pass gives you unlimited access to Danny Jones during open swim until June.

Youth Athletics


Summer Basketball registrations will be taken the month of April at Various parks and community centers around North Charleston as well as online on the City website at www.northcharleston.org. Summer Basketball is for boys and girls ages 9-17 years of age.

Baseball and Softball

Practices are ongoing at all of our fields.  Opening day is scheduled for Saturday, April 9. at Northwoods Pepperhill and Wescott Parks. We will have 58 teams competing this year in Baseball and Softball and cross over with some of our t-ball, Machine Pitch, 9-10, 11-12 baseball, and our softball teams with teams from the Murray Hill League.

Middle School Athletics


The Middle School Soccer league will start play the week of April 18th, games will be played on Mondays and Wednesday at Doc Hursey Football Field and Zucker Middle School.  There are five middle schools that are participating in this year soccer league, they are: Morningside Middle, Northwoods Middle, Zucker Middle and Palmetto Scholar Academy.

Adult Sports


The winter season for Co-Ed Adult Kickball will conclude play in April.  Games are played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Park.  

Flag Football

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Flag Football will conclude play in April at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Park.  Games are played on Monday nights on the football field.

Co-Ed 4 v. 4 Basketball

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed 4 v. 4 Basketball continues play.  Games are played at  Danny Jones Gym and Ferndale Gym.  Games are played on Wednesday nights.

Co-Ed Volleyball

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Volleyball continues.  Games are played at Ferndale Gym.  Games are played on Monday nights.

Co-Ed Softball

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Softball continues every Sunday at Lent's Field on the Danny Jones Complex.

Adult Tennis

The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.

Tennis Clinics/Lessons

The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available.  Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously.  Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6:00 pm.  Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm.  For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.

Fly Dog Fitness

The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"!  Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area.  Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.

We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.

Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Morning classes meet on M,W,F (3 days a week, 12 sessions) 6:00 am - 7:00 am.  Evening classes meet Mon.-Thurs. (4 days a week, 16 sessions) 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  In addition to our 6am and 6pm sessions, we offer Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9am and 5 pm classes.  Once you sign up for one time slot, you may attend as many different sessions in a 4 week camp as you like!  For more information, visit Fly Dog Fitness on the web at www.flydogfitness.com

Senior Programs



Pickleball 101

All Seniors are invited to come out and play the new and exciting game of PICKLEBALL, Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays at 7pm at the Danny Jones Complex.

Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing continues on Thursdays at 7pm, at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.   This class is designed for all ages including seniors.

"Senior Sneakers"

Join us as we "Walk the Circle" at our leisure!  Log your laps inside the community center at the receptionist desk and become eligible for Incentive Prizes for walking milestones.  Registration is required for this FREE program.  Men and women 50+ years of age are eligible to take part.  registration is continuous!

Senior Water Aerobics

Registration for Senior Water Aerobics .  Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Self Defense

A Self-Defense class is now being held at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle each Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, contact Belinda swindler at (843) 745-1028.

Senteo Zumba

Senteo Zumba meets each Monday from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

ZUMBA Classes at Park Circle

Kelli offers a Tuesday and Thursday evening class at 5:30 pm-6:30 pm.  Cost is $5 per class.  For more information, call Belinda Swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Gold at Thomas M. Evans, Sr. Community Center

This class is designed for Seniors and is held on Tuesday mornings.  For more information call, (843) 760-4289.

Senior Line Dancing (class registration is continuous)

Each Monday morning at Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 9:30 am - 11:00 am.  Classes in December will be held at Armory Park due to Christmas Festivities at Park Circle.


This very low impact senior exercise class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

"JOY” Table Tennis

Monday and Wednesday, 9:30am-11:30am – Armory Park

"Joy Bocce"

Tuesday and Thursday, 10am-noon – Armory Park

"Joy Tappers" Basic Tap Lessons

 The JOY Tappers meet on Wednesdays at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle from 1:30pm - 2:30pm.

Annual Events


Pitch, Hit and Run

This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league.
