Upcoming Special Events

JOY "DROP-IN"

The JOY (Just Older Youth) program will sponsor a "Drop-In" at the Thomas M. Evans Community Center located at 7801 Dorchester Road from 11am-1pm, October 4.  Senior Citizens are invited to come and see what programs the North Charleston Recreation Department has to offer them join and take part!

"Fall Bonanza Game Day"

Calling Seniors to come take part in the "Fall Bonanza Game Day" on Friday October 29 at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Times for this event are 1pm-3pm.  Seniors must RSVP to participate by calling (843) 745-1028.  Your lucky number might be called!

Antique and Collectible Show

The Antique and Collectible Show returns October 25 -26 from 10am-5pm to the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Come out and take advantage on some great buys.

Tribute to Our Veterans

This celebration will be held on Tuesday, November 11 at the beautiful Park Circle in North Charleston. This special event will be held from 10:30am – 1:00pm.  The Department of Defense and the National Committee for Veterans Day has selected North Charleston as a Regional Site for six consecutive years.  We ask that you please join Mayor Summey in a special ceremony in which all attending veterans will receive a specially designed Challenge Coin for their dedication and service to our great country.

This annual event is open to Veterans of all wars.  Over 600 Veterans were honored last year.  This year’s event will prove to be another great tribute to our honored guests.  Guest Speaker for the event is world renown Lt. Col. Clebe McClary, USMC (Retired).

All veterans are urged to take part in this most memorable ceremony that has been tagged by many as the “best in the region”.  North Charleston takes tremendous pride in having the opportunity to acknowledge the priceless, self-sacrificing acts of courage demonstrated by our Veterans.

Veterans, please R.S.V.P no later than November 4 to take part in this wonderful event celebrating a unique appreciation to those responsible for the freedoms enjoyed by all Americans. Veterans Day Essay and Poster Contest

Each afterschool program will participate in a Veteran’s Day Essay and Poster Board contest in reference to the Veteran’s Day celebration. All poster boards will be displayed at the City of North Charleston Veteran’s Day Celebration on Tuesday November 11 at the Felix Davis Community Center at Park Circle. The winning essay writers will participate in the Veteran’s Day program and share their essay among several veterans on their special day.

North Charleston Swim Team

The North Charleston youth swim team has begun!  We will be offering practice for home school children Monday-Thursday from 10:00am-11:00am.  An evening practice will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00pm-8:00pm.  Children should be at least 8 years old and able to swim the length of the pool.  For more information, please contact Doug Fetchen at 843-745-1028.

Water Aerobics

Water Aerobics continues to be a popular program. The cost is $20 per month and classes are offered Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Danny Jones.  The morning class is 9:00 am – 10:00 am and the evening class is 6:00pm – 7:00pm.  To register, visit Armory Park at 5000 Lackawana Boulevard across from the Danny Jones Comples.  For more information, call (843) 745-1028.

Youth Athletics 

Football

Our Youth Football Program will continue to play games Monday through Thursday and some Saturdays at Danny Jones and Pepperhill Football fields.    

Cheerleading

Cheerleading squads will continue to cheer and support their teams. The cheerleading teams represent each sector of our City including Union Heights, Northwoods, Danny Jones, and Pepperhill.

Soccer

Games will continue to be played Monday through Thursday and some Saturdays at River Oaks Soccer Complex and Lents Field.  

Baseball

The fall Baseball season will continue to play games Monday through Thursday, with home baseball games being played at Park Circle and Wescott Park. NCRD will be hosting the 2014 Bernie Varnadore Baseball Tournament October 9-12 at Park Circle, MWV/Kapstone Park and Wescott Park.

Fall Softball

The fall Baseball season will continue to play games Monday through Thursday, with home baseball games being played at Wescott Park.

Basketball

Registration for Winter Basketball will start October 1. Registration will be taken the entire month of October. Registration is being taken at Accabee, Armory Park, and Park Circle, Gethsemani, Jeanene Batten, and Thomas M. Evans Sr. community centers and Wescott Park. Registration is also being taken Northwoods Park, River Oaks Gym office, City Hall and registration is being taken online on the city’s website.

Middle School Athletics

Fall Sports

The North Charleston Recreation Department is proud to partner with the middle schools in our City to provide athletic programs and activities.  With the start of a new school year brings opportunities for students in the middle school to participate in a wide range of sports and other activities.  It is our desire to develop and offer programs that will both enhance the student success in the classroom as well as offer them an opportunity to compete and enjoy team sports and activities.

The following schools take part in the North Charleston Middle School Athletic Program: Northwoods, Military Magnet, Morningside and the opening of our new middle school Jerry Zucker Middle School of Science.

Football

Middle School football games are played every Wednesday night beginning at 5:30pm at Attaway-Heinsohn Stadium on East Montague Avenue across from North Charleston High School.  Come out an watch the future High School stars of the North Charleston area!

Volleyball

The Middle School Girl's Volleyball program participates inthe Lowcountry Volleyball League.  Games are played Monday-Thursday at various sites.  Home matches for the North Charleston Middle School Program are played at Zucker Middle School and River Oaks Middle School.

Adult Sports

Flag Football

Adult Co-Ed Flag Football is played on Monday evenings at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Football Field.  Games begin at 6:30pm.

Adult Senior Men’s Softball

Senior Softball is underway at MeadWestvaco Kapstone Park Monday – Wednesday evenings.  Games begin at 6:45 pm.  Come see some the action!

Men's Industrial Basketball

The Men's Industrial Basketball league games are played each Saturday beginning at 9am at Sterett Hall Gym.  Ten teams take part in this league from companies throughout the area.

Women's Softball League

The fall Women's Softball league is underway at Mead Westvaco-Kapstone Park.  Games are be played on Monday nights beginning at 7:00pm.

Adult Kickball

Adult Co-Ed Kickball  will slam into action for the next season the week of October 13.  Games are played at MeadWestvaco Kapstone Park Thursday nights starting at 6:30pm.

Adult Tennis

The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.

Tennis Clinics/Lessons

The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available.  Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously.  Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6:00 pm.  Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm.  For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.

Fly Dog Fitness

The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in callaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"!  Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area.  Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.

We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.

Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Morning classes meet on M,W,F (3 days a week, 12 sessions) 6:00 am - 7:00 am.  Evening classes meet Mon.-Thurs. Community Centers

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Afterschool Program at eleven of our community centers across the City of North Charleston.  The eleven centers include Russelldale, Highland Terrace, Persephone Moultrie, Raymond Buck Miller, Northwoods Park, Ferndale, Felix Pinckney, Whipper Barony, Gethsemani, Murray Hill and the newly built, Miner Crosby, located in the Wando Woods community will also host the Afterschool Program as well.  We will be able to accommodate 400 children for the 2014 – 2015 school year.   While we understand that recreation is important for the physical growth of the children, we will also place emphasis on academics in order to enhance the mental growth of the children as well.  Our goal is to offer a program that will enrich the development of the whole child.   The registration will until centers reach their total capacity. Girl Scouts

All community centers are in the process of beginning an exceptional Girl Scout program. The Girl Scout programs is offered to all girls participating in the afterschool program where they become members of the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina organization and will meet weekly during afterschool program hours.

Google Pilot Training Program

A Google pilot training program will begin at Felix Pinckney community center. This program will allow afterschool students to participate and learn the complete structure of creating a technology gaming system. The most important focus of this program is the exercise of a student’s motor, math, and critical thinking skills.  Will all the programs in place and more to come, we are looking forward to an enjoyable but safe year as we work with the children in the Afterschool Program. 

Double Dutch

The Double Dutch Program will be offered at the Afterschool Program locations again this year.  Registration and contact information to come at a later date.

Step Team

The Step Team program is currently accepting registration applications; the middle school team is located at Persephone Moultrie community center and the elementary team is located Northwoods community center. If there are any questions please call 740-5807.

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland will be December 2-5 (Tuesday- Friday) from 9:00am – 1:30pm, Armory Park. Registration begins October 1st and continues the month of October. Winter Wonderland is a free event for pre-school age children. Children will enjoy a music room, arts & crafts, a puppet show, and more fun activities. Harvest Festival

Harvest Festival will be October 25, 2014 from 4pm -8 pm, East Montague Ave. The kid's zone will be open 4pm - 6:30pm.  There will be fun games, face painting and inflatables in the kid's zone.  Come dressed in your costume and participate in the costume contest!  Fun for the entire family!

Senior Programs

Wake-Up Yoga

Haro Jun, a certified yoga instructor and participant in our Monday line dancing class is now offering “Wake Up” Yoga from 8:30am-9am on Monday mornings. Line dancers and others are invited to participate. There is no charge for the class.

"Senior Sneakers"

Join us as we "Walk the Circle" at our leisure!  Log your laps inside the community center at the receptionist desk and become eligible for Incentive Prizes for walking milestones.  Registration is required for this FREE program.  Men and women 50+ years of age are eligible to take part.  registration is continuous!

Senior Water Aerobics

Registration for Senior Water Aerobics .  Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Bellyfit

Bellyfit, a class that focuses on stomach fitness with a belly dancing influence will be held every Monday at Park Circle beginning at 6:00pm.

Self Defense

A Self-Defense class is now being held at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle each Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, contact Belinda swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Classes at Park Circle

Kelli offers a Tuesday and Thursday evening class at 5:30 pm-6:30 pm.  Cost is $5 per class.  For more information, call Belinda Swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Gold at Thomas M. Evans, Sr. Communtiy Center

This class is designed for Seniors and is held on Tuesday mornings.  For more information call, 760-4289.

Senior Line Dancing (class registration is continuous)

Each Monday morning at Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 9:30 am - 11:00 am.

Seniorcize

This very low impact senior exercise class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

Youth

Pitch, Hit and Run

This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league. Harvest Festival and Block Party

October 25 on East Montague from 4pm until after dark, the Harvest Festival and Block Party features live musical performances, art and craft booths, costume contests and children's activities.
