Camps & Children's Programs

North Charleston Recreation Department offers a wonderful selection of Children’s Programs available to the community.

Some programs require a registration application and registration fee while others may not. Please note this listed under each program. CASH IS NOT ACCEPTED AT REGISTRATION; only checks, money orders or cashier checks.

ACTIVITY & PLAY DAY

Activity & Play Day is offered during most school holidays, to provide a safe haven for children while parents are working. Children will be entertained with a variety of activities throughout the day. Participants must bring a bag lunch, drink, and snack. Please register early as space is limited.

AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

ages: 5–12

The North Charleston after school program is designed to keep your child motivated and active after school while providing quality supervision and guidance.

We focus on academic enrichment and recreational activities designed to teach your child valuable leadership and life skills they can use in their everyday decision making processes.

Commitment, responsibility, socialization, creativity and physical activity are the key components of the program which ensures that children are on track to become productive citizens of society.

CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL

ages: Pre-school
registration: March 29–April 25, 2014 • Park Circle

Held on May 2, 2014 from 9:00 am-1:00 pm, the Children’s Festival is a major part of the annual North Charleston Arts Festival. Children are encouraged to dress in weather appropriate, comfortable clothes as activities will be held outdoors.

SUMMER CAMP

ages: 5–12

The NCRD hosts an exciting summer camp from June 9 –August 15, 2014. The camp provides a safe and secure environment and offers the opportunity for children to have fun during the summer. Children enjoy a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, sports, swimming, cultural art center visits and special surprises.

Each camper receives a colorful camp shirt and is required to wear this shirt on field trips. The Summer Feeding Program will provide daily lunches for all campers. Registration is offered at Armory Park, City Hall, Felix Pinckney, Gethsemani, Jeanene Batten, Northwoods Park, Park Circle, Thomas Evans, Sr. and Accabee

DOUBLE DUTCH

2:30pm-5:30pm (After School)
ages: 5 and up

The NCRD offers an after school double dutch program. Each community center has the opportunity to compete against other centers and selected teams will be pulled to compete in the American Double Dutch League (ADDL) competitions. All teams will be fully educated and trained on a professional level and design their own ending cheer for their free style routines. All teams will compete only against their grade level and are judged based on their uniform, completing compulsory, number of jumps in speed, sportsmanship, originality and difficulty in their freestyle routine. Those selected will compete in the 4 levels of ADDL competitions held from February to June.

STEP TEAM

ages: 5–8 and 9–12

The NCRD offers an Afterschool Step Team program. The Step Teams design their own step routines, however all music used must be approved by the Programs Division. Teams are judged on their sound, appearance, coordination, sportsmanship, rhythm and originality, and are eligible to compete in 3 major competitions held in January, February and April.

WINTER WONDERLAND

December 2, 3,4 and 5 • 9:00am-1:30pm
ages: Pre-school
registration: Month of October
registration fee: Free

Children are invited to come enter the North Pole to visit Santa Claus. Santa’s elves are on hand to lead children through several fun stops including a music room, arts and crafts, and a puppet show. The chilren will also have a chance to see Santa and take a group Christmas photo.

FISHING CAMP

ages: 8–12
registration: February 10th until maximum capacity (12 campers)
registration fee: $75
registration site: City Hall

Discover freshwater and saltwater fishing and much more! Enjoy learning about offshore and inshore fishing safety, become familiar with different types of rods, reels, baits and lures. Great field trips are planned for the participants to experience.

Camp session is offered from 8:00 am–5:00 pm, June 23-27. Each participant receives a colorful camp shirt and is required to wear this shirt on field trips. Space is Limited!
