Children’s Theatre Series
The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department’s Children’s Theatre Series provides an excellent field trip opportunity for students in grades K4 through sixth grade. Daycares, families, and seniors are also welcome to enjoy the exciting presentations. Unless noted otherwise, the minimal charge of $2.00 per child enables all adult chaperones to attend FREE. Admission fee is waived for students with free/reduced lunch status. Schools are responsible for their own transportation to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston, SC 29418. All performances begin at 10:00am and last approx. one hour. Groups of 10+ must register in advance. Reservation forms are available below. Payment is due at the door by cash, credit card, money order, or check made payable to the City of North Charleston. For more information, call 843-740-5854.
All Children’s Theatre performances are designed in accordance with state curriculum standards. Educators may visit the performing groups’ websites or contact them directly to access study guides and lesson plans.

The toy room comes to life in Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale. A toy soldier with a damaged leg falls in love with a music box ballerina. He must overcome his limitations to save her from the Evil Renegade Rat, who wants her as his bride. This original “toy story” is perfect for the holidays. Don Gruel & Noel Holland of Atlantic Coast Theatre for Youth have been touring throughout the U.S. since 1995, giving hundreds of performances for more than 70,000 audience members annually. This powerful show brings pivotal moments of the American struggle for Civil Rights to the stage. The Freedom Riders, “Bombingham,” and the Montgomery bus boycott are just a few of the key events that unfold before the audience. Key figures and dynamic songs from the time period are presented with an accessible script that provides a great launching pad for understanding this challenging time in our nation’s past. The 2015/16 season marks Bright Star Touring Theatre’s 13th anniversary of providing professional theatre to young audiences! Will they find musical stardom, or will their plans of making it big be thwarted by a gang of bumbling robbers? Find out in this updated adaptation of a timeless tale reminding us to respect our elders and that we are never too old for our dreams to come true. Live music and audience participation included! Founded in 1991, Porkchop Productions has performed extensively for schools, libraries, youth groups, and special events throughout the east coast. Designed in accordance with Common Core and ELA standards, their shows incorporate creative problem solving and character development/assessment and provide academic rigor through higher order thinking skills.
