Our History: Helen Keller's visit to Charleston Naval Hospital

3/28/2017

Helen Keller “listens” to a wounded soldier by placing her fingers on his lips.

Keller, a pacifist, was an advocate for injured veterans.  She visited the Charleston Naval Hospital on a nationwide moral building tour that took her to 70 similar military institutions.  All the while, she lobbied Congress to fund rehabilitation.

The American Federation for the Blind, at her urging, created the Blind Veterans Association, which still helps returning service members 65 years after its creation.
