Happening In February 2016
The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2016 Summer Camp registration begins on Monday, February 1, 2016. Summer camp is for kids between the ages of 5-12 as of May 31, 2016. We will have 19 camp sites this year. Registration will take place at the following locations: Armory Park Community Center, Felix C. Davis Community Center at Park Circle, Felix Pinckney Community Center, Gethsemani Community Center, Jeanene Batten Community Center, Miner Crosby, North Charleston City Hall in the Rec Department, Northwoods Park Community Center, Parry Webb Community Center, and Thomas M. Evans Sr. Community Center. Registration will end April 29, 2016 or when camps are full. Sites fill up quickly so register fast. Camp runs from June 9th until August 5th from 7:30am to 5:30 pm. A late fee will be charged for campers that are picked up after 5:30pm. The cost is $275.00 for city resident and $250.00 for each additional sibling. The cost for non-residents is $400.00 and $375.00 for each additional sibling. Rates are for entire summer camp and includes breakfast, lunch, and all activities and field trips. Fishing Camp registration begins February 17, 2016. Fishing camp is for children 8-14 years of age. Camp runs from June 20th until 24th from 8:30am to 5:30pm at Gary McJunkin Community Center at Collins Park. The cost is $75. Campers will have the opportunity to learn about fishing safety while becoming familiar with types of rods, reels, baits, and lures. Campers will head to a different fishing site each day including freshwater and saltwater fishing. Campers will need to pack a lunch, snack, and plenty of water each day. Liberty Hill Literacy Run
The Liberty Hill Improvement Council is hosting a 5k run-walk on Saturday, March 5, 2016. The start is at 10:00am at the Felix Pinckney Community Center. Registration can be done online at www.lhicliteracy.org or at Felix Pinckney Community Center on March 4th from 5pm to 8pm or March 5th at 8am. If you register before February 12, 2016, the cost is $25 for adults and $10 for 18 years and under. The registration fee includes a t-shirt. Registration after February 12th is $30 for adults and $15 for 18 years and under. This includes a t-shirt while supplies last. There will be a post-race bar-b-que with live entertainment. Afterschool Registration has started and will resume until all afterschool community center sites are full to capacity. Academic enrichment and recreational activities are being offered during the 2015-2016 afterschool program year. New this year for all afterschool sites is the supper program offered by the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Activity and Play Days
Activity and Play Days will be offered on selected days during the CCSD holiday break held in November. Participants must bring a bag lunch, drink, and snack. Special Olympics Swim Practice
Once again this January, Danny Jones will be hosting swim team practice once a week for area residents practicing for the Special Olympics state meet. Danny Jones will host a swim meet for Special Olympics on Tuesday, April 19th. Over 100 athletes from around the state are expected to attend and compete.
Masters Swim Team
In February our Palmetto Masters Swim Team will be headed to Myrtle Beach to swim in the Short Course Yards State Championships. We are the two time defending champions and hope to repeat again with over 50 adults from the local area attending. Later this spring a number of our adults will be headed to Greensboro, NC to compete at Nationals.
Winter Pool Pass
The winter pool pass is now available for purchase at the Armory. For residents the cost is $30 individual/$50 family. The cost for non-residents is double. This pass gives you unlimited access to Danny Jones during open swim from January 1 – Memorial Day weekend.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Class
This course teaches individuals advanced rescue skills, how to prevent aquatic emergencies and the proper conduct expected of a professional lifeguard. This is a blended learning class where a portion will be completed in the class room and the rest will be done at the pool. Register at Armory Park 5000 Lackawanna Blvd, North Charleston, SC 20405. Ages 15 & up. Course includes CPR –PR, First Aid certifications – (books not included – may download free or purchase copy from the Red Cross)

Course Dates: March 7th – 18th
ALL participants must pass a pre-requisite swimming test to be eligible to take the Lifeguarding course – this test is given the first day of class, after check-in. Part 1 “300 yard swim” - The swim is 300 yards non stop (not timed) -100 yards freestyle with a supportive kick and rotary breathing with FACE IN WATER, 100 yards breastroke with a pull-breath-kick-glide motion, 100 yards freestyle or breastroke (swim goggles allowed for this portion). Part 2 “Brick Test” - Candidate must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from 7 feet of water, and return to starting position within 100 seconds (swim goggles not permitted for brick portion). Part 3 “Treading Water” –Participants must tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs with their hands under their armpits (this is a separate activity from the brick test and does not include using any weight).

Registration will begin January 2, 2016. Registration will continue until January 31, 2016. Registration can be done online or at various gyms or recreation offices around the city.

Middle School Athletics
Middle School Basketball games continue through February at all District 4 Middle Schools.

The winter season will begin for Co-Ed Adult Kickball in mid-February. Games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Park.
The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Flag Football will begin mid-February at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Park. Games will be played on Monday nights.
Co-Ed 4 v. 4 Basketball
The winter season for Adult Co-Ed 4 v. 4 Basketball will begin March 16 at Danny Jones Gym and Ferndale Gym. Games will be played on Wednesday nights.
The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Volleyball will begin 14 at Ferndale Gym. Games will be played on Monday nights.
The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Softball will begin February 7 at MeadWestvaco-Kapstone Park. Games will be played on Sunday afternoons at Lent’s Field on the Danny Jones Complex.
The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.
The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available. Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously. Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6:00 pm. Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm. For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.
Fly Dog Fitness
The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"! Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area. Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.
We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.
Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Morning classes meet on M,W,F (3 days a week, 12 sessions) 6:00 am - 7:00 am. Evening classes meet Mon.-Thurs. (4 days a week, 16 sessions) 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. In addition to our 6am and 6pm sessions, we offer Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 9am and 5 pm classes. Once you sign up for one time slot, you may attend as many different sessions in a 4 week camp as you like! All Seniors are invited to come out and play the new and exciting game of PICKLEBALL, Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays at 7pm at the Danny Jones Complex.
Beginning Thursday, Feb. 4, 7pm, at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle. This class is designed for all ages including seniors.

Senior Water Aerobics
Registration for Senior Water Aerobics . Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Pitch, Hit and Run
This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league. Ages 7-8 years; Ages 9-10 years; Ages 11-12 years; Ages 13-14 years.
