AARP Tax Assistance and Preparation for Seniors

AARP Tax Assistance Preparation is being held every Monday and Wednesday 9am - 2pm at the Felix Davis Community Center on Park Circle.

This program begins February 6 and concludes on April 12. There is no cost to seniors for this service.  For more information, call (843) 745-1028.

Save the Date

The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2017 Children’s Festival will take place on May 5, 2017 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Park Circle.  This is a FREE annual event for pre-school aged students and residents.  This year’s theme is Under the Big Top!

Youth Programs

Afterschool Program

Afterschool Registration continues until all afterschool community center sites are full to capacity.  The North Charleston afterschool program is designed to keep your child motivated and active afterschool while providing quality supervision and guidance.  We focus on academic enrichment and recreational activities designed to teach your child valuable leadership and life skills they can use in their everyday decision making processes.  Commitment, responsibility, socialization, creativity and physical activity are key components of the program which ensures that children are on track to become productive citizens of society.  All afterschool sites will have the supper program offered by the Lowcountry Food Bank. Summer Camp Registration

Online Summer Camp Registration

The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2017 Summer Camp registration begins on Monday, February 1, 2017.  Summer camp is for children between the ages of 5-12 years old, as of May 31, 2017.  In 2017, there will be 19 camp sites locations. 

Registration will be available at the following locations:
Armory Park Community Center-  5000 Lackawanna Blvd.
Felix C. Davis Community Center at Park Circle- 4800 Park Circle
Felix Pinckney Community Center-  4790 Hassell Avenue
Gethsemani Community Center-  2449 Beacon Street
Jeanene Batten Community Center-  3742 Dorchester Road
Miner Crosby Community Center- 3901 Paramount Drive
North Charleston City Hall in the Recreation Department-  2500 City Hall Lane
Northwoods Park Community Center- 8348 Greenridge Road
Perry-Webb Community Center-  3200 Appleton Avenue
Thomas M. Evans Sr. Community Center-  7801 Dorchester Road

You may also register online at www.northcharleston.org (A fee will apply).  Northwoods Park Camp will not be available for online registration.  Registration will end when camps are full.  Sites fill up quickly so you are encouraged not to wait. Camp runs from June 15 - August 4 from 7:30am to 5:30pm.  A late fee will be charged for campers that are picked up after 5:30pm.  The cost of Summer Camp is 275.00 for city residents and 250.00 for each additional sibling.  The cost for non-residents is 400.00 and 375.00 for each additional sibling.  Rates are for entire summer camp and includes breakfast, lunch, all activities and field trips.  To register, you must bring a current South Carolina issued driver’s license or South Carolina issued identification card, a current utility bill, and birth certificate.  Parent or guardian must be present at the time of registration.  For more information, please call (843) 740-5807 or e-mail aaustin@northcharleston.org.

Fishing Camp

Fishing Camp registration begins February 6, 2017.  Fishing camp is for children 8-14 years of age. Camp runs from June 26 until 30 from 7:30am to 4:00pm at Gary McJunkin Community Center at Collins Park.  The cost is 75.00  Campers will have the opportunity to learn about fishing safety while becoming familiar with types of rods, reels, baits, and lures.  Campers will head to a different fishing site each day including freshwater and saltwater fishing.  Campers will need to pack a lunch, snack, and plenty of water each day.  There is a maximum of 12 campers so register quickly.  For more information, visit www.northcharleston.org or contact Kathy Kackley at (843) 740-5805.   

Aquatics

Winter and Year Round Pool Pass

The winter and year around pool passes are now available for purchase at the Armory. The winter pass for residents the cost is 30.00 individual/50.00 family.  The year around pass for residents the cost is $80 individual/$140 Family. The cost for non-residents is double.  This pass gives you unlimited access to Danny Jones during open swim from January 1 – Memorial Day weekend.

Palmetto Masters

In February, our Palmetto Masters Swim Team will be headed to Myrtle Beach to swim in the Short Course Yards State Championships.  We are the two times defending champions and hope to repeat again with over 50 adults from the local area attending

Special Olympics Swim Team Practice

Once again this January, Danny Jones will be hosting swim team practice once a week for area residents practicing for the Special Olympics state meet later this spring.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

This course teaches individuals advanced rescue skills, how to prevent aquatic emergencies and the proper conduct expected of a professional lifeguard. This is a blended learning class where a portion will be completed online and the rest will be done at the pool. Register at Armory Park 5000 Lackawanna Blvd, North Charleston, SC 20405. Ages 15 and up. Course includes CPR –PR, First Aid certifications – (books not included – may download free or purchase copy from the Red Cross)
Cost: 100.00
Classes held: This is a two weeks course, Monday/Wednesday
from 6pm - 9pm and Saturday 9am - 4pm

Pool Sessions: Danny Jones Pool

Course Dates:

Session I: March 6 - March 18 
Session II: April 10 - April 22
Session III: May 15 - May 27

ALL participants must pass a pre-requisite swimming test to be eligible to take the Lifeguarding course – this test is given the first day of class, after check-in.  Part 1 “300 yard swim” - The swim is 300 yards non stop (not timed) -100 yards freestyle with a supportive kick and rotary breathing with FACE IN WATER, 100 yards breastroke with a pull-breath-kick-glide motion, 100 yards freestyle or breastroke (swim goggles allowed for this portion). Part 2 “Brick Test” - Candidate must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from 7 feet of water, and return to starting position within 100 seconds (swim goggles not permitted for brick portion). Part 3 “Treading Water” –Participants must tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs with their hands under their armpits (this is a separate activity from the brick test and does not include using any weight)

Youth Athletics

Winter Basketball

Youth Basketball games will continue to be played Danny Jones, Northwoods, River Oaks, Ferndale, North Charleston High School, Mt. Moriah, and Palmetto Scholar Academy through the month of February.   All-Star teams will be picked the in February for ages 9 – 14.  Tournament sites will be given out and all the boys and girls teams will begin play at the end of February.  The 7 – 8 year old teams will be playing a city wide post season tournament when their regular season ends.

Spring Baseball and Softball Registration

Registration for our “Youth Baseball/Softball Program” will continue through February 11, 2017.  The registration fee remains at $30.00 for North Charleston residents and $60.00 for non-residents.  As a convenience to our citizens, multiple registration sites throughout the City are available as well as online registration, including Accabee Community Center, Armory Park, Gethsemani Community Center, Jeanene Batten Community Center, Northwoods, Park Circle, River Oaks, Wescott Park and the Recreation Department at City Hall.  Youth ages 4 through 19 may participate this year.  In baseball, the age groups include T-Ball (4 & 5), Machine Pitch (6 – 8), Dixie Minor (9 & 10), Dixie Youth (11 & 12), Dixie Boys (13 & 14), Dixie Pre-Majors (15-16) and Dixie Majors (17-19).  Softball age groups include Coach Pitch (6 – 8), Dixie Angels (9 & 10), Dixie Ponytails (11 & 12), and Dixie Belles (13 – 15).

Middle School Athletics

Basketball

Regular season basketball games will continue through the end of February with games being played on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursday at Military Magnet, Northwood Middle, Ferndale Gymnasium and Zucker Middle School.

Men's Senior Softball

The Men's Lowcountry Senior Softball league is taking registrations for new players.  If you are 50 years of age or older and are interested in playing, please call Cindy Dambaugh at (843) 740-5801 or e-mail cdambaugh@northcharleston.org

Kickball

The winter season for Co-Ed Adult Kickball will begin February 1.  Kickball sees competitive play on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Kapstone Park.  Games are begin at 6:30pm.  

Flag Football

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Flag Football will begin play on February 6 at Pepperhill Park.  Games are played at the Pepperhill Park on Monday nights beginning at 6:45pm.

Co-Ed Softball

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Softball swings into action on February 5. Games are played at Lent's Fields and begin at 10am.

Adult Tennis

The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.

Tennis Clinics/Lessons

The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available.  Lessons are available for Adults and Children. Disc Golf

Disc Golf is played on the outer 8 islands around Park Circle Monday – Sunday from dusk to dawn, continuously.  Tuesday night doubles are played beginning at 6pm.  Registration takes place at the #1 tee box at 5:00 pm.  For more information on Disc Golf, call (843) 740-5801 or (843) 745-1028.

Fly Dog Fitness

The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"!  Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area.  Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.

We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.

Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Belly Dancing

Belly Dancing continues on Thursdays at 7pm, at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.   This class is designed for all ages including seniors.

"Senior Sneakers"

Join us as we "Walk the Circle" at our leisure!  Log your laps inside the community center at the receptionist desk and become eligible for Incentive Prizes for walking milestones.  Registration is required for this FREE program.  Men and women 50+ years of age are eligible to take part.  registration is continuous!

Senior Water Aerobics

Registration for Senior Water Aerobics .  Registrations are accepted at Armory Park or Park Circle. The cost is $20 a month.

Self Defense

A Self-Defense class is now being held at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle each Thursday afternoon beginning at 5:30 p.m.  For more information, contact Belinda swindler at (843) 745-1028.

ZUMBA Classes at Park Circle

Senior Line Dancing (class registration is continuous)

Each Monday morning at Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 9:30 am - 11:00 am.  Classes in December will be held at Armory Park due to Christmas Festivities at Park Circle.

This very low impact senior exercise class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Felix C. Davis Community Center on Park Circle.  Class time is 10:00 am - 11:00 am.

Pitch, Hit and Run

This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April. All around winners will advance to a sectional competition. Participants must play in local league.
