AARP Tax Assistance and Preparation for Seniors
AARP Tax Assistance Preparation is being held every Monday and Wednesday 9am - 2pm at the Felix Davis Community Center on Park Circle.

Save the Date
Pre-registration begins March 1st for the City of North Charleston Recreation Department Children’s Festival event, which is a major component of the annual North Charleston Arts Festival. The event will take place on Friday, May 5th from 9:00am to 1:00pm. This is a FREE annual event for pre-school aged students and residents. This year’s theme is Under the Big Top! The day will be filled with exciting themed activities where participants will enjoy music, arts and crafts activities, jump castles and many more surprises. Afterschool Registration continues until all afterschool community center sites are full to capacity. The North Charleston afterschool program is designed to keep your child motivated and active afterschool while providing quality supervision and guidance. We focus on academic enrichment and recreational activities designed to teach your child valuable leadership and life skills they can use in their everyday decision making processes. Commitment, responsibility, socialization, creativity and physical activity are key components of the program which ensures that children are on track to become productive citizens of society. Online Summer Camp Registration
The City of North Charleston Recreation Department’s 2017 Summer Camp registration begins on Monday, February 1, 2017. Summer camp is for children between the ages of 5-12 years old, as of May 31, 2017. In 2017, there will be 19 camp sites locations.
Registration will be available at the following locations:

You may also register online at www.northcharleston.org (A fee will apply). Northwoods Park Camp will not be available for online registration. Registration will end when camps are full. Sites fill up quickly so you are encouraged not to wait. Camp runs from June 15 - August 4 from 7:30am to 5:30pm. A late fee will be charged for campers that are picked up after 5:30pm. The cost of Summer Camp is 275.00 for city residents and 250.00 for each additional sibling. The cost for non-residents is 400.00 and 375.00 for each additional sibling. Rates are for entire summer camp and includes breakfast, lunch, all activities and field trips. To register, you must bring a current South Carolina issued driver’s license or South Carolina issued identification card, a current utility bill, and birth certificate. Fishing Camp registration begins February 6, 2017. Fishing camp is for children 8-14 years of age. Camp runs from June 26 until 30 from 7:30am to 4:00pm at Gary McJunkin Community Center at Collins Park. The cost is 75.00 Campers will have the opportunity to learn about fishing safety while becoming familiar with types of rods, reels, baits, and lures. Campers will head to a different fishing site each day including freshwater and saltwater fishing. Campers will need to pack a lunch, snack, and plenty of water each day. Winter and Year Round Pool Pass
The winter and year around pool passes are now available for purchase at the Armory. The winter pass for residents the cost is 30.00 individual/50.00 family. The year around pass for residents the cost is $80 individual/$140 Family. The cost for non-residents is double. This pass gives you unlimited access to Danny Jones during open swim from January 1 – Memorial Day weekend.
Our 8 and under swimmers will be headed to Greenville the weekend of March 11-12 for the 8 and under state champs. A few weeks later our swimmers will be competing in Rock Hill as we wrap up the short course season. At the end of April several of our masters swimmers will be flying to California to compete at Nationals.
SeaPerch will once again be running the local schools underwater robotics contest on March 9 at the Danny Jones pool. Students build robots for weeks leading up to that day and test out the project in an underwater obstacle course.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
This course teaches individuals advanced rescue skills, how to prevent aquatic emergencies and the proper conduct expected of a professional lifeguard. This is a blended learning class where a portion will be completed online and the rest will be done at the pool. Register at Armory Park 5000 Lackawanna Blvd, North Charleston, SC 20405. Ages 15 and up. Course includes CPR –PR, First Aid certifications – (books not included – may download free or purchase copy from the Red Cross)

ALL participants must pass a pre-requisite swimming test to be eligible to take the Lifeguarding course – this test is given the first day of class, after check-in. Part 1 “300 yard swim” - The swim is 300 yards non stop (not timed) -100 yards freestyle with a supportive kick and rotary breathing with FACE IN WATER, 100 yards breast stroke with a pull-breath-kick-glide motion, 100 yards freestyle or breast stroke (swim goggles allowed for this portion). Part 2 “Brick Test” - Candidate must be able to swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from 7 feet of water, and return to starting position within 100 seconds (swim goggles not permitted for brick portion). Part 3 “Treading Water” –Participants must tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs with their hands under their armpits (this is a separate activity from the brick test and does not include using any weight).

Registration for Middle School Soccer and Track & Field for boys and girls will be held during the month of March. Students can register at the school they attend: Morningside Middle, Northwoods Middle, Military Magnet Academy and Jerry Zucker Middle School.

Men's Senior Softball
The Men's Lowcountry Senior Softball Spring/Summere league is underway. The league welcomed two new teams to the league for the spring/summer season. The winter season for Co-Ed Adult Kickball is underway. Kickball sees competitive play on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Kapstone Park. Games begin at 6:30pm.

The winter season for Adult Co-Ed Softball is underway at Lent's Field. Games begin at 10am each Sunday morning.

Masters Swim Team
The Palmetto Masters swim team practices weekdays at the Danny Jones pool from 5:45am-7:00am and is open to any adult age 18-99. Most of our athletes come 2-3 days a week and can swim all 4 strokes. The average yardage is in the 2,000-3,000 meter range per day so this is a step above adult swim lessons. While there is no requirement to compete, most of our athletes take part in swim meets, triathlons and/or running races in the area at some point during the year. The cost is $30 per month. The North Charleston Recreation Department has a very active Adult Tennis Program. Our team tennis program offers a variety of levels of competition and is open to men and women. Matches are played against teams across the Greater Charleston area.
The North Charleston Recreation Department offers Tennis Lessons and Clinics at the Collins Park Tennis Center on the Collins Park Complex (4115 Fellowship Road off Dorchester Road). Fees vary depending on type of lesson or clinic (group or private), Lesson Packages are available. Lessons are available for Adults and Children. The North Charleston Recreation Department and "Fly Dog Fitness" have joined together to offer Adult Fitness programs in collaborative effort to make "North Charleston More Physically Fit"! Together we are offering the most unique, creative and exciting workouts in the area. Whether you consider yourself to be in good shape or can't remember the last time you did more physical activity required at work, we can cater to your fitness level.
We are offering you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself, raise your self-esteem, and increase your social value and influence...all while getting an invigorating workout.
Classes take place for the majority on the outside; utilizing some of North Charleston's most beautiful green spaces at Park Circle, Danny Jones Complex and Riverfront Park. Pitch, Hit and Run
This program allows young athletes to showcase their individual skills in pitching, hitting and running. Local competition is tentatively schedule during April.
