Convenience Centers
The Sanitation Division manages the City's Convenience Center, where citizens can drop off trash. You can bring trash to the Convenience Center, on Columbia Street, off South Rhett Avenue. It is open Wednesday thru Saturday from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm in the summer (daylight savings time) and 7:00 am until 5:00 pm during the winter (standard time). Please bring proof of residency with you. The Convenience Center is strictly regulated.
CONVENIENCE CENTER REQUIREMENTS
The Center is operated for the convenience of residents of North Charleston only and functions under the controls of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and Ordinances of the City of North Charleston.
The Center is for the use of residents of North Charleston only. It augments normal trash pick up services provided by the City. Commercial contractors and businesses may not use the Center. Residents are defined as persons who live in the City. Persons owning property in the City but who live elsewhere may not use the Center. Prospective users must provide valid identification, with a North Charleston address, before they will be allowed to use the Center.
Large, two-axle trailers and covered trailers will not be given access to the Center. All loads will be inspected by the attendant on duty before being unloaded.
The Center does not provide recycling services so common items such as lead-acid batteries and petroleum products cannot be accepted. They, and other items not authorized for disposal at this Center may be taken to the Charleston County Landfill, located on Bee's Ferry Road, or be disposed of at other authorized collection points.
Rummaging and scavenging is NOT allowed at the Center.
Users not complying with the requirements of the Center will be denied access. The City reserves the right to prohibit access to any prospective user at any time.
Items that can be accepted for disposal include:
- Bagged leaves and grass clippings
- Limbs, bushes and small logs up to six inches in and four feet long
- Select construction debris
- Furniture
- Electronic items including computers, TVs, and Small appliances,
- Cardboard,
- Metal
- White Goods, including refrigerators, stoves, water heaters, freezers, dishwashers, trash compactors, washers, dryers, air conditioners and items of a similar nature.
Items that CANNOT be accepted for disposal include:
- Hazardous materials including batteries, paint, paint containers, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, petroleum products, Fuel Containers and chemicals
- Concrete, concrete blocks, bricks, tile
- Creosote treated items
- Large stumps and logs
- Pressurized Containers
- Shingles and felt paper
- Regular household garbage.
