Comprehensive Plan

The City of North Charleston adopted its update of the Comprehensive Development Plan on July 24, 2008.

The State of South Carolina requires local jurisdictions engaged in land use planning and zoning to prepare and update a Comprehensive Development Plan once every ten years. The City obtained services of Robert & Company of Atlanta, Georgia to assist in the update of the plan which was approved by City Council. The project team successfully hosted a series of Planning and Land Use workshops at various locations in the City and they collected public input. The City Staff also worked with a coalition of Neighborhood Association Presidents to generate public participation on this project.

This plan update examines Population, Housing, Economic Development, Land Use, Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, Community Facilities and Transportation. This plan also includes a section on Implementation. The plan was presented to the public and to the Planning Commission on March 24, 2008. The Planning Commission took the matter up on April 14, 2008 and recommended approval at a Special City Council Workshop on May 19, 2008. It was further discussed at the Committee of the Whole meeting on July 16, 2008.
